Opportunities for Service with City of Montpelier’s Community Services Department

Good afternoon, my name is Rebecca Johnston and I am an AmeriCorps VISTA serving with the City of Montpelier’s Community Services Department. As a Resource Development VISTA, my role in service this year is to advocate for the participation of local individuals and groups to strengthen the services provided by Montpelier’s Parks, Recreation, and Senior Activity Center to the thousands of residents they serve annually. I am contacting you today to inquire if I might be able to list a few possible volunteer options for Champlain students, both ongoing and for specific events.

Our departments will be holding three community events in October, and we are seeking volunteers who might be interested in serving for each. The first event is held by our Parks Department on October 14, from 4:00-8:00PM. This event is our Enchanted Forest celebration of story telling and the arts in nature. We are looking for volunteers who might be interested in the arts or in acting to serve as guides for the event and are looking for around ten volunteers. On October 21, we are looking for twenty volunteers to help staff our Recreation department’s annual Ski and Skate Sale in Montpelier High School from 9:00AM-4:00PM. This event might appeal most to student interested in winter sports who want to give back to a program that will help fund Montpelier youth’s annual ski program. Finally, we are looking for ten volunteers on October 28 from 12:00PM-2:00PM to help serve our Recreation Department’s Halloween Party. This event will appeal most to students who might enjoy teaching and who would enjoy coming up with games and activities for children ages 6 and up.

In addition to these events, we have several ongoing volunteer opportunities for students who might be interested in the arts, in elder care, or in biology and ecology. I would love to learn more about how I might be able to offer these opportunities to students at Champlain College through the Center, and I would welcome all advice on how to go about creating this conversation.
