April is Earth Month, and we’re excited to announce the launch of our Fair Trade for Planet & People campaign!
At Fair Trade USA, we recognize the interconnectedness of planet and people, and the critical role that fair trade plays in promoting the prosperity of both. For us to thrive and create a world that can sustain all of us for the future, we must equally focus on all three of the core pillars of sustainability – environmental, social, and economic.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) do just that, and Fair Trade USA’s rigorous standards contribute directly to six of them. By ensuring that producers and their families can meet their social and economic needs, we are able to work together to invest in cleaner technology, efficiencies, environmentally-friendly production, climate change resiliency, and protecting the environment.
We invite you to participate in the campaign all month by entering our giveaway, and choosing Fair Trade Certified™ products that empower people, improve communities, and protect the planet.
Fair Trade & the SDGs
The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a call for action by all countries to promote prosperity and economic growth, while protecting the planet and upholding basic human rights. Fair trade enables direct and meaningful progress towards the following six goals:
While fair trade alone won’t end poverty, core aspects like Community Development Funds and a guaranteed minimum price enable economic stability for producers and their families. Learn more in this story about farmers in Ecuador.
Fair trade standards ensure equal pay for women, representation in leadership and decision-making, and prohibit sexual harassment and discrimination. Learn more in this story about women tea pluckers in India.
Fair trade standards require that workers have access to clean water and sanitation facilities in the workplace. Learn more in this story about fishers in Mexico.
Fair trade standards ensure safe and dignified working conditions, breaks and paid overtime, and help uphold labor laws so producers can benefit from, rather than be exploited by, global economic growth. Learn more in this story of a garment worker in Pakistan.
Fair trade provides consumers and businesses the opportunity to leverage their purchasing power to make sustainable and ethical choices. Learn more in our 2021 Consumer Insights Report.
Fair trade seafood standards require proper waste management, prohibit overfishing, and more. Community Development Funds often go to reducing pollution and ocean preservation. Learn more in this story about fishers in Mexico.
