One Bead at a Time is the oral memoir of Beverly Little Thunder, a two-spirit Lakota Elder from Standing Rock, who has lived most of her life in service to Indigenous and non-Indigenous women in vast areas of both the United States and Canada. May 5th, 6-7pm- Brilliant Imperfection with Eli Clare For more than two decades, Eli Clare has woven hope, critical analysis, and compassionate storytelling together in his work on disability and queerness, insisting on the twine of race, class, gender, sexuality, and disability. Peace & Justice center is so excited to welcome two new wonderful groups to our Allied Group program! The People’s Farmstand The People’s Farmstand is a weekly payment-optional pop-up farmstand that aims to get delicious, local produce in the hands of the people, regardless of ability to pay. The People’s Farmstand operate under the belief that access to vegetables and fruit are a basic human right. In partnership with The People’s Kitchen, they set up weekly markets in target neighborhoods to break down barriers to the typical farmers market experience. In 2021, their first operating season, The People’s Farmstand distributed $22,000 worth of local surplus produce to the families they work with. Learn more about The People’s Farmstand here. Vermont Student Anti Racism Network The Vermont Student Anti-Racism Network (VSARN) is a statewide group of students working to promote anti-racism in Vermont schools. VSARN believe in deconstructing white supremacy and racism starting with the youngest generation. VSARN works on multiple projects, including The Elementary School Book Project, which is aimed at educating elementary school students on race and racism through books and Zoom discussions led by VSARN. Despite two years of public campaigning, Hannaford has ignored farmworker’s call to join Milk with Dignity. Donate to the PJC Transplants Plant Sale and Block Party Saturday May 7th, 11am-3pm Come by the Pride Center’s parking lot (corner of Maple and South Champlain, across from Advance Music) on May 7th from 11am – 3pm to pick up some new plants or cuttings to brighten your garden, yard, or indoor spaces! This year we are expanding the event to include workshops, community activities, food trucks, and live music. We are asking our communities to donate some plants, cuttings, or both so that there is stock to sell for the event! Click here! #housed802 Community Meeting Tuesday March 22nd, 7 – 8:30pm on Zoom As the Housing Crisis continues to affect more and more Vermont residents from the unhoused to families that simply cannot find any housing to rent or buy in an affordable fashion, VAHC wants to incorporate all voices at our table. Over the next several months, these meetings will work to meet three objectives: 1) Education and updates on what is going on with housing at the State House, 2) Discussion about VAHC’s priorities and how they affect you, 3) and how we can advocate together to make these housing priorities into realities. Grow Wild Initiative Survey Survey for Residential Properties in Burlington Students at the University of Vermont, in collaboration with Burlington Parks, Recreation & Waterfront and the city’s “Grow Wild” initiative are gathering information about mowed spaces in the city that have the potential for conversion into native pollinator habitat. Students will be analyzing data to help the city determine logical next steps for making pollinator friendly changes to mowed properties.
