CSWD NewsFlash: December

December 2016 Newsflash
During the last month of the year, the US produces 1 million extra tons of waste.

According to the EPA, the volume of household waste in the United States shoots up 25% between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day1. That’s adds up to about 1 million extra tons…in just a month.

It doesn’t have to be this way. We shouldn’t have to pack even more stuff than usual into the landfill just because we want to celebrate the holidays with friends and family.

During December, we hope you’ll join us in the fight against holiday waste. This edition of the NewsFlash has some easy ways for you to reduce your family’s waste, including:

  • Why natural beats fake when it comes to choosing a tree
  • How you can cut waste even while opening presents
  • What happens when you put bear repellent in your blue bin (spoiler alert: it doesn’t end well)
Thanks for reading, and Happy Holidays from all of us at CSWD!

3 steps to keeping your holiday spirit out of the landfill

We get it. You don’t need another thing to focus on in the hustle and bustle of the holidays. We’re here to show you how easy it is to cut waste out of shopping, throwing a party, opening presents, and more.

Au natural: An argument for Christmas trees
What creates jobs, makes family memories, and won’t sit in a landfill for 1,000 years when you’re done with it?

Give the gift of compost at home
Through December 31, buy a SoilSaver or Green Cone (for your soilmate…or yourself) and get 20% off bulk soils, delivery, or up to 10 bagged products.

Green Mountain Compost is a program of CSWD.

It’s December 26th. What do I do with my tree?
Don’t worry, we’ve got facilities for that. And for residents of some towns, you can even get it picked up.

Beware of blue bin busters
What happens when you put something in your blue bin that doesn’t belong, like plastic bags, unrinsed mayo jars, or bear repellent?

The Chittenden Solid Waste District (CSWD) is a municipality governed by a Board of Commissioners appointed by the 18 towns and cities of Chittenden County. It was created by the State of Vermont to manage the solid waste stream generated by the residents, businesses, and visitors of the county. Our primary focus is to use economically and environmentally sound methods to reduce and manage this stream.
