October Events with the Winooski Valley Park District

Autumn has arrived with cooler temperatures and changing leaves! Join the Winooski Valley Park District and partner organizations for these great events to get you, your family and friends outside during the month of October to enjoy all that autumn in Vermont as to offer!

      Keeping Track Monitoring Program Workshop Series with Sue Morse of Keeping Track and the Winooski Valley Park District

The Winooski Valley Park District is excited to announce that it will be partnering with Keeping Track ® and Sue Morse this fall to offer a Keeping Track Monitoring Program (KTMP) workshop series for individuals interested in learning more about wildlife species and habitat conservation in their community. The Winooski Valley Park District is looking for interested individuals to join the team for the workshop series who will help in continued monitoring of sites at various parks throughout the region. The workshop series includes all materials, six all-day field classes and two evening lectures/potlucks. Field classes will be conducted entirely outdoors in the field. No experience necessary! They are looking for individuals as young as 85 and as old as 10 to participate!

FIELD DATES FOR WORKSHOP SERIES:

–        October 4th  – Wolf Run, Jericho, Vermont

–        December 6th – Montgomery, Vermont (exact location TDB)

–        January 17th – Colchester Pond, Colchester, Vermont

–        February 8th – Wolf Run, Jericho, Vermont

–        March 7th – Wolf Run, Jericho, Vermont

–        April 11th – Ethan Allen Homestead, Burlington, Vermont

–        PLUS two evening lecture/potlucks (dates/locations TBD) 5:30-10:00pm

      Fall Foliage Walk at Muddy Brook Wetland Reserve, South Burlington, VT

Sunday October 5, 2014 at 11:00am-12:30pm

Enjoy a leisurely walk to admire the autumn foliage and wonderful views of Mount Mansfield with the Winooski Valley Park District. Discuss why leaves change and how plants and animals are preparing for the cold months ahead. Muddy Brook Wetland Reserve is located off of Van Sicklen Road in South Burlington.       Ethan & Ira Challenge: A Historical Scavenger Hunt with the Ethan Allen Homestead Museum

      Citizen Science Workshop

Sunday October 12, 2014 1:00-3:00pm at the Ethan Allen Homestead, Burlington

Are you a birder? Do you enjoy watching the leaves change color in the fall? Come learn about eBird and the USA Phenology Network. Programs like these need people like you to monitor wildlife in your backyard! No matter your experience, come learn how you can take part in nationwide citizen science projects!       4th Annual Halloween at the Homestead

Sunday October 26, 2014 from 1:00-3:00pm at the Ethan Allen Homestead, Burlington, VT

Bring your family and friends and come dressed in costume for a fun-filled afternoon of games, crafts, treats and more! There will be prizes, face painting, Halloween arts and crafts, and yummy fall treats to enjoy!  VINS will be joining us with live birds to show off! Admission is FREE and open to the public.
