This Summer, Learn All About Composting Ecology and Management
Curious about composting? Ever imagined yourself working at a compost facility? This summer you can learn all about how to run a compost facility, and meet seasoned professionals in the field.
PSS 154 Composting Ecology and Management is a new course offered this summer for all UVM students. We will cover the basic biology and ecology of compost, site management, stormwater management, recipe development, feedstock analysis, and compost management techniques. In addition to lectures, students will perform feedstock analyses, build their own compost pile, visit working compost facilities in the state, and receive insights from guest lecturers on site permitting and state policies behind composting. We will visit local compost facilities including Green Mountain Compost, Highfields Center for Composting, Grow Compost, and Karl Hammer’s Vermont Compost.

Announcing the “Our Changing Planet” Internship at Charlotte Central School
Synopsis: Help third graders [ 7 and 8 years old ] understand that the Earth is always changing and that we have a dynamic relationship with our planet. Learn to use hands on activities to help children investigate forces of nature and their part in the planet’s story. Then use Jan Reynolds, “Vanishing Cultures” series and your knowledge of ecosystems and the environment to take the children on a journey to indigenous cultures around the world. Help the children become experts on a specific biome and indigenous culture. Guide them in making connections between the land, its climate, plants, and animals, and the development of that culture. Explore how planetary changes and technology are changing the traditional way of life for the people they studied.
When: Fall Semester 2013 Dates: August 26th – December 13th Number of Internships Slots: 4 – 8 Credits: 6 or use as a senior project / thesis
