Intern with Educating Children Outdoors!

The North Branch Nature Center in Montpelier is looking for an energetic and motivated intern to be a part of Educating Children Outdoors for the 2013-2014 academic school year.  The intern will enjoy working with elementary aged children, be charismatic, take initiative, stand out as a leader, be willing to learn and share best practices and follow safety protocols put in place by the North Branch Nature Center.

ECO connects children with the natural world and helps foster stewardship in their communities.  Through collaboration with public schools ECO helps to open doors to the joy of learning outside in all kinds of weather. By using city parks, public lands, and other local green spaces ECO engages children in the natural inquiry based learning of their surrounding environment. ECO provides an opportunity for teachers and students to apply integrated academic curricula beyond the classroom to the outdoors for exploration, experimentation, creativity, and personal growth.

Each week the intern will volunteer their time and work in a public school with a lead ECO teacher.  There are currently 5 Central Vermont schools participating in ECO (Montpelier, East Montpelier, Moretown, Waitsfield and Plainfield).  Depending on the availability of the intern, the hours are flexible and can be 4 to 12 hours a week.

Overview
This position will be working in the Solid Waste Program of the Waste Management and Prevention Division of VT DEC.   Primary responsibilities include developing and implementing a statewide solid waste management plan and the provisions of Act 148.   A focus of the work will be on waste reduction, recycling, and organics diversion.    Other duties include working with solid waste districts, municipalities, and others with respect to improving solid waste management in Vermont, developing and disseminating outreach materials, and other solid waste issues.

Announcing the Our Changing Planet Internship at Charlotte Central School

Synopsis:  Help third graders [ 7 and 8 years old ] understand that the Earth is always changing and that we have a dynamic relationship with our planet.  Learn to use hands on activities to help children investigate forces of nature and their part in the planet’s story.  Then use Jan Reynolds, “Vanishing Cultures” series and your knowledge of ecosystems and the environment to take the children on a journey to indigenous cultures around the world.  Help the children become experts on a specific biome and indigenous culture.  Guide them in making connections between the land, its climate, plants, and animals, and the development of that culture.  Explore how planetary changes and technology are changing the traditional way of life for the people they studied.

When:  Fall Semester 2013        Dates:  August 26th – December 13th                                                                             Number of Internships Slots:  4 – 8                                                                                                                  Credits:  6  or use as a senior project / thesis
