This online event is designed for higher education instructors wishing to infuse issues of sustainability (ecological stability, social equity and economic vitality) into their curriculum regardless of the discipline. Sustainability issues cross all disciplines and the intent of this course is to identify those areas of intersection. Effective assessment of critical thinking skills, collaboration, creativity and the ability to analyze, discuss and create solutions to real-world sustainability problems will be explored. This intensive two-day faculty development program brings together faculty from all fields, allowing for an exchange of ideas and nurturing an enriching collaborative atmosphere. This interdisciplinary exercise helps faculty to explore the shifts in pedagogy needed to incorporate sustainability concepts, problems, or solutions into new or existing courses. Drawn from experienced faculty and professionals on issues of sustainability, environment, and curriculum, the instructional materials, activities, and presentations provided strongly support education for sustainable development. This workshop will introduce best practices for integrating sustainability-focused undergraduate research across the curriculum, with an emphasis on community-based research. Participants will have the opportunity to design courses with a research component (from intro-level to capstone courses) as well as non-course-based research projects, such as summer research experiences and independent student-faculty projects. Participants will leave with resources on sustainability course design, tips for establishing and maintaining community partnerships, exercises for student reflection and tools for assessment. Envision your campus and community as a sustainability pedagogical opportunity, a chance to infuse sustainability across your curriculum and provide applied, real world sustainability experiences for students. Furman University is offering an interactive idea-generating workshop for sharing and establishing best practices to utilize the campus and surrounding community as Sustainability Living Learning Labs. The workshop is intended for faculty and sustainability staff who are currently using Sustainability Living Learning Labs on their campus or in their surrounding community. This two-day workshop will focus on building a shared framework for developing, institutionalizing, expanding and maintaining Sustainability Living Learning Lab programs both on campus and in the surrounding community.
