Becoming an Outdoor Family seeks instructors

Instructors Needed!

Becoming an Outdoor Family, now in its 21st year, is a collaboration between UVM Extension, the Vermont Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife. The program offers a weekend of family camping early in June at Stillwater State Park in Groton, Vermont. About 200 people of all ages gather at the park for two days of orientation to the outdoors, relaxation and recreation. The object of Becoming an Outdoor Family is to encourage Vermonters to spend more time outdoors and better enjoy the natural features of this lovely state.

We are seeking new instructors and classes for 2018. Instructors receive full admission to the weekend and campsites (these accommodate 8 campers) free of charge in exchange for their work, and may be reimbursed for class materials. We would love to have instructors for any of the following classes: Nature photography, drawing or writing; storytelling; snakes (or other animals); wilderness survival; cooking in camp; orienteering, GPS and map and compass; wild edible plants; crafts using natural materials; water sports; yoga; wilderness survival skills; other courses that take advantage of the park’s trails and Groton Pond.  The 2-hour classes mostly take place outdoors and should be activity oriented and hands-on; some may have age limits, but most will be open to campers ranging in age from elementary grades to adult.

Materials related to last year’s event are posted at our web site at https://www.uvm.edu/extension/outdoorfamily.

If you are interested in participating as an instructor in 2018 please contact Debbie FajansDebbie.fajans@uvm.edu or 800-278-5480.
