350.org is building a global grassroots movement to solve the climate crisis. Our online campaigns, grassroots organizing, and mass public actions are led from the bottom up by thousands of volunteer organizers. 350.orgworks hard to organize in a new way, using online tools to facilitate strategic offline action. We want to be a laboratory for the best ways to strengthen the climate movement and catalyze transformation in our energy and political systems. 350 Action is a 501(c)4 affiliated organization dedicated to injecting climate into the US political process.
About the Political Engagement Director position
The Political Engagement Director will work closely with a broad range of staff, partners and volunteers to develop and operationalize a plan to put climate change at the center of the 2016 election cycle. A successful candidate will be optimistic, creative, self-driven, and able to balance the interests of many stakeholders while driving toward a larger vision.
The Political Engagement Director will:
- Oversee all project management within the 350 Action Electoral Plan, including birddogging, mobilizations, road tours and GOTV programs.
- Build a work plan and coordinate with Executive Director and Communications/Strategy Director to align it with organizational goals, budgets and staff capacity.
- Build and maintain an effective and healthy team to execute the programs, including managing hiring processes.
- Identify new campaign opportunities and coordinate rapid-response digital and media streams to ensure maximum impact.
- Cultivate high-level partnerships critical to the success of the campaign, and represent 350.org and 350 Action in the media, with high-profile partners and in other public venues as needed.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience managing political and/or issue campaigns
- 3+ years of high-level strategic planning or project management experience
- At least one cycle running volunteer or field operations on an electoral campaign
- Strategic campaign development expertise and excellent problem-solving skills
- Highly organized, and able to manage multiple projects at once without sacrificing quality.
- Experience managing diverse teams of organizers, political, press and digital campaigners,
- Proven track record of working successfully with coalition partners
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills and the ability to write for a variety of audiences and platforms
- Knowledge of and dedication to the climate movement, and/or other movements for social justice. Commitment to building grassroots power as a means to effect change
- Knowledge of legal limits on 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 affiliated organizations
- Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with team members who are often remote
- Able to make management and political decisions quickly and effectively, even without having all the information you might need
- Excellent time management skills and commitment to healthy work-life balance
Desired (but not required) skills and experiences
- Professional digital campaigning experience
- Experience at the intersection of online and offline organizing, mobilization, and direct action
- Ability to train others on online campaigning tools and offline campaigning skills
- Creativity and comfort with experimenting with new tools and tactics
- Digital and media campaigning experience
