About the Program: We stand at a critical moment in Earth’s history; a time when humanity faces significant challenges and opportunities to redirect our course toward a sustainable and desirable future. Colleges, universities, and other institutions must play a critical role in this transformation, not only by training and educating future leaders and supporting researchers in the quest for applied solutions, but also by serving as models of innovative practices and sustainable systems, campuses, and communities. This weeklong course offers participants the opportunity to focus on this important challenge, expand their professional network, gain leadership skills, insights into leadership for change, and learn from leaders in the field at UVM’s award-winning green campus.

The program will be led by UVM Instructors Stephanie Kaza and Elizabeth Palchak, each of whom bring years of experience in the field of sustainability in Higher Education. Stephanie is Professor of Environmental Studies at the University of Vermont and Director of the Environmental Program, co-founded the UVM Environmental Council, a campus-wide consortium on sustainability, and is the faculty director for the UVM Sustainability Faculty Fellows program. Elizabeth’s background includes: Teton Science Schools’ first Sustainability Coordinator, directed Leadership development at Teton Science Schools Graduate Program, former instructor with NOLS staff in the Office of Sustainability at UVM, Doctoral student in Energy Transitions and Sustainability, and is a fellow in the Office of Sustainability and at the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics. Guest Instructor Debra Rowe, is the President of the U.S. Partnership for Education for Sustainable Development (www.uspartnership.org), also National Co-coordinator of the Higher Education Associations Sustainability Consortium (www.aashe.org/heasc), Founder of the Disciplinary Associations’ Network for Sustainability (www.aashe.org/dans) and Senior Advisor to the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (www.aashe.org). Imagine a day filled with new knowledge gained through presentations, lectures, site visits, group projects, networking, panel discussions and the sheer osmosis of context. Days are a combination of classroom time and excursions. Meals are for networking and peer-to-peer learning with participants, faculty and guest lecturers.

Professional Certificate/non-credit Program Fee: $1,858 (includes tuition, program materials, meals (coffee, breakfast & lunch each day), and site visits. Housing is not included, but affordable on campus housing is available as an option during the registration process.
