The Pennywise Pantry

  • Learn how to shop for fresh, long-lasting, and nutritious foods in Produce and Bulk. With this interactive and hands-on tour, we’ll explore the Produce and Bulk departments, learning a simple method for finding the best value on fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans by paying attention to the price per pound. You’ll learn tips for selecting and storing these foods at home to get the longest use out of them, develop a better understanding of Co-op sales, and get inspiring recipes to start cooking quick and affordable meals at home. No matter what kind of diet you follow, these pennywise tools help you stock your kitchen with variety of healthy, local, and even organic foods.

Integrative Oncology: A Union of Natural and Conventional Cancer Treatment–A Discussion with Amy Littlefield ND, MSOM, FABNO

  • Green tea, curcumin, Vitamin D and medicinal mushrooms can be a part of an oncology care plan but how do you know how much to take and whether it is safe? Naturopathic oncologists are trained to understand when a therapy is substantiated by evidence and to guide patients about safe supportive use in conjunction with conventional care. Dr. Amy Littlefield, a board certified naturopathic oncologist, will offer her expertise and answer questions related to the field of integrative oncology. She will present on the recent advances in the research of natural therapeutics and explain the strategies that are used to determine when and how natural treatments may be used safely with conventional oncology.

My Child and Me Cooking Class: Homemade Sauerkraut

  • Monday, November 11, 9:30am – 10:30am, McClure Multi-Generational Center

  • This class is especially for parents and caregivers with children under age 5. In this class, we’ll explore traditional foods and having fun in the kitchen as we engage our little ones in the process of learning how to mix, measure, and cook delicious and nourishing food. All the food served in this class will be organic, follow the rhythms of local farms, and will introduce traditional foods principles such as soaking grains, culturing dairy products, fermenting vegetables, making nourishing broths, and using fruit in probiotic beverages the whole family will enjoy.  The class is held in the family-friendly McClure Multi-Generational Center. For mothers/caregivers and children up to age 5.

Kids’ Cooking Class: Homemade Soup to Eat and Share (ages 6-12 + mentor/parent)

  • Tuesday, November 12, 5:30 – 7pm, King Street Youth Center
  • $5 City Market Members, $10 non-members (per CHILD); mentor pairs FREE
  • With Thanksgiving right around the corner, take this opportunity to give thanks by making homemade soup and sharing a pot with COTS (the Committee on Temporary Shelter). In this class, we will cut vegetables and grate cheese to make a large pot of golden cheddar cheese soup. After sampling our soup, we will pack up a care package to bring to COTS to share with families in need of housing. For kids ages 6-12 accompanied by an adult.

 The Frugal Fridge

  • The Frugal Fridge tour complements the Pennywise Pantry shopping tour. This tour focuses on how to shop for healthy, affordable foods once you leave Produce and Bulk and enter the grocery aisles and perishables coolers. We’ll learn to become savvy label readers as we shop for nourishing, long-lasting foods that contain 5 ingredients or fewer. Have fun turning packages over to look at labels and compare prices across similar products. We’ll keep the pantry in mind for a few of these products, but spend the bulk of our time examining 5-ingredient choices for the fridge and freezer as we focus on dairy, eggs, meat and seafood, frozen veggies and fruit, breads, tortillas, and more.

Indoor Gardening

  • This workshop will focus on growing a steady supply of fresh greens with only a cupboard and a windowsill. Ready to harvest in just 7-10 days, these greens are good in fresh salads, stir fries, and more! Peter Burke will demonstrate how to grow the bulk of your salad greens through the winter with sunflower, radish, buckwheat, pea and broccoli shoots used as examples. Everyone will take a planted tray home from class. Peter Burke writes and teaches about organic gardening at The Daily Gardener.

Italian Cooking Class: Wild Mushroom Ravioli and Sage Butter

  • Monday, November 18, 6:00 – 8:00pm, McClure Multi-Generational Center
  • $5 City Market Members, $10 non-members
  • Learn to make handmade ravioli with chef Antonino DiRuocco in this Italian cooking class inspired by the flavors of the season. Learn how to mix the dough, knead, and roll out the ravioli, filling them with a savory wild mushroom filling. We will serve these savory ravioli with a classic sage brown butter sauce. Antonino DiRuocco from Capri, Italy was formerly a chef at Villa Tragara Ristorante (now Michael’s on the Hill) and has won numerous awards for his rustic and traditional Italian fare.

A Mosaic of Flavor: Burmese Curry with Pumpkin and Pork

  • Pumpkin is a favorite ingredient in Burmese cooking. In this class, Zar Ni Maw will show us to cook pumpkin Burmese-style, making a rich, tamarind curry with pumpkin and pork. Zar Ni Maw is a gentle woman whose fierce spirit enabled her to survive the civil war in Burma and then go on to graduate from Oberlin College. She will demonstrate how common ingredients are combined in unique ways to create Burmese cuisine. This class is part of the Mosaic of Flavors series, a collaboration with the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program.

Together we will make a scrub, cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. You’ll leave this class with everything you need to give yourself a facial at home and recipes to do so again in the future.
