Town Meeting Day: March 1, 2022

The first Tuesday of March is Town Meeting Day (Tuesday, March 1, 2022) — a unique democratic process still found in parts of New England, including all of Vermont. Learning about the history and process of Town Meeting, or even observing a meeting, may serve to be a teachable moment in a class or other group gathering.

A few helpful resources:
Town Meeting & Local Elections page of the Vermont Secretary of State’s website
Citizen’s Guide to Town Meeting, Vermont Secretary of State, 2008
2 minute video from UVM Political Science Professor Emeritus, Frank Bryan, expert on Vermont Town Meeting

Additionally, anyone 18 years or older can register to vote in Vermont, up to and including the day of the election.   Champlain subscribes to TurboVote, a voter registration tool that allows students (and faculty and staff) to register to vote, request an absentee ballot, and provides ballot information. This can be used for any election nationwide, including here in Vermont.

On the Town Meeting Day ballot for Burlington in 2022 will be the election of a City Councilors, School Board Commissioners, various questions on funding of Burlington projects, and more. Sample ballots and other information are available on the City of Burlington’s websiteLearn more and be a #CivicChamp!
