It’s definitely spring! We are seeing spring beauties and hepatica in the woods and translucent green leaves emerging on trees.
Below, VLT ecologists Liz and Allaire offer insights into some things you may see out in nature in the weeks ahead. We’re excited to share conservation successes and new online events you can join wherever you are. And we’re honored to share a very special guest perspective.

The People of the Land
Reconnecting with Wantastegok (Brattleboro)
Ten years ago on April 22 the State of Vermont formally recognized the Elnu Abenaki Tribe. In this guest perspective, Rich Holschuh shares his reflections on a piece of land in Wantastegok/Brattleboro that is important to the Elnu Abenaki. VLT is honored to support the tribe in protecting and stewarding this land.
What you helped us accomplish
Good news for local food
Congratulations to Hannah and John Doyle of Boneyard Farm who now own their conserved forever farm! They moved to a spacious new location in Fletcher, with help from VLT and the farm’s previous owners, the King family.
Farmers Mark and Kerry Drown are on a mission to bring wholesome, affordable food to their community. With support from VLT and the Freeman Foundation, they bought and conserved their 300-acre farm in Wheelock.
A walk in the vernal woods with Liz and Allaire
Plus, a nature-inspired coloring page!
It’s spring! VLT ecologists Liz Thompson and Allaire Diamond share pictures and notes on spring-time wildflowers and more.
Allaire was also inspired to create an artwork of shapes and textures from Vermont’s landscape—a lovely coloring page for children and adults alike!

The winner will receive $5,000 for a farm project that exemplifies their commitment to community, land stewardship, and innovation.
Tax-smart ways to give in the future
Tax day has come and gone, but it’s not too late to think about tax-smart ways to support farms, forests, clean water, and lands open for all. One example is donating appreciated stock to VLT instead of giving cash. Another is giving a tax-free gift from your IRA, if you’re 70.5 or older. We hope you find this information helpful for all of your giving. And we thank you for your support
