Attend a Beyond Waste Student Summit
PLAN is hosting four virtual summits this year—and they’re FREE for students from member campuses! Join us to role-play the development of campus projects and envision the future we want to live in.
Join the Emergence University Class of 2021!
Role-play as a student at Emergence University, a campus aiming to empower the next generation of student changemakers through collective skill-building, brainstorming, and radical community care.
Join together with students from all across the country to build projects for Emergence University. At the end of the day, propose your ideas to campus staff, faculty, and fellow students!
These role-playing activities will explore various organizing tools and strategies that can be replicated for both on- and off-campus projects. Each event has a different area of focus, so you are welcome to join us for multiple (or all!) of the Summits!

Creating Creative Infrastructure: Campus Compost
Partnered with the US Compost Council
February 6th, 2021
Starting a compost program on your campus can be tricky—from securing funding to figuring out how materials will flow through your campus system. In this simulation, students will work on everything from selecting the right system for their campus to creating an educational program for a newly-established compost system.
Beyond Plastics: Fighting for a Plastic Free Campus
Partnered with Break Free From Plastic
March 6th, 2021
Getting your administration to commit to eliminating single-use plastics is a big step for any campus trying to achieve Zero Waste, but how do you get there? In this simulation, students will work on rallying interest among the campus community and hosting a signing ceremony that works to hold the campus and administration accountable.
Food for Thought: Liberating the Table
Partnered with [TBD]
April 10th, 2021
Food waste is often one of a campus’ largest and most complex waste streams. In this simulation, students will work through the early stages of building out a proposal for a new food recovery program and securing the right partnerships on campus to ensure the program thrives.
Fashion Forward: Establishing a Circular Economy
Partnered with [TBD]
May 1st, 2021
A campus thrift store can be a great resource for any campus community, from helping reduce the amount of clothes entering the waste stream to creating a fun social hub on campus for students to come together. In this simulation, students will create a budget to get the thrift store off the ground and plan an unveiling event to rile up campus excitement!
