Northeast Recycling & Disposal Market Update

Covid-19 Disposal Information

As students and faculty prepare to return to campuses this fall, it is important to ensure that everyone is educated about what can and can’t go into their bins. Recycling loads that contain items like PPE – masks, gloves, etc. will not be accepted at our recycling facilities.

Visit casella.com/RecycleBetter for more disposal tips and information and to download posters to hang at your bins.

Recycling Market

Looking ahead, the recycling market will still be supply-driven with all eyes on COVID-19 and its impacts on the economy.
Price volatility and supply chain uncertainty, combined with challenging economic conditions, are keeping most major mill expansions on hold during the pandemic.

Disposal Market

The demand for disposal capacity in the Northeast is outstripping available
supply as disposal facilities are reaching their permitted capacity or closing.
As a result, waste disposed in the Northeast often has to be transported longer distances – in many cases to other states in the Northeast and beyond – to reach its final destination. Additionally, there continues to be heightened regulatory and operating cost inflation at disposal facilities in the Northeast. These factors continue to drive higher disposal pricing.

Legislative Update: Food Waste Ban in Vermont

On July 1, Vermont became the first state in the US to ban food waste from
being disposed of at the residential level. This is the final phase of Act 148, which was passed into law in 2012. The State of Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation has indicated that they will not be actively
enforcing the ban at the residential level, but they will likely be reaching out to or visiting commercial generators of food waste to confirm that they are diverting their food waste. Residents are encouraged to backyard compost, bring food waste to a local drop-off, or contact a food waste hauler to inquire about curbside services. Businesses are encouraged to reach out to their current solid waste service provider to obtain curbside service.

Technology Spotlight: Beyond the Bin Webinar Series

Starting in October we will kick off a Beyond the Bin webinar series covering topics that are most pressing to our customers, particularly college and university campuses. We will have panels to include industry experts and leaders on campus.
Topics to include challenges with waste, recycling and compost due to COVID-19, and how to progress sustainability goals during these challenging
times. Please share any topics of interest or concern so we can ensure they get covered!

Here’s What’s Abuzz at our Landfills!

This year, we’ve welcomed thousands of new “workers” to some of our
landfills – and those new residents include honeybees including queens. Bees love the open space that our landfills provide, with lots of yummy clover and other flowers to feed them. We’re proud to help support pollinators at a time when their habitat is in decline.
