It’s that time of year again! Save the date for our annual We <3 Local Food Recipe Contest. This year, we’ve chosen Butternut Squash as our featured ingredient and we can’t wait to see what you come up with! These hearty squash are the perfect staple for a Vermont winter. Roast them up as a side or puree into soup. You can even sneak them into hummus and baked goods. The possibilities are endless! Enter your recipe online January 28th-February 11th and stay tuned for details on how to sample and vote on the top 3 recipes in February!
No-Fuss Kitchen: Minimal Waste Cooking

Food EducationJoin us for our cooking series all about making cooking from scratch as easy as possible! Our former Outreach and Education Coordinator, Meredith Knowles, will lead this hands-on class about making healthy, simple, minimal-fuss dishes all while creating as little waste as possible. We’ll focus on creatively using commonly discarded food parts and making sure you use up everything you buy! Along the way, you’ll learn easy kitchen tricks and tips to help make cooking at home easy and fun.

Pennywise Pantry

Thursday, February 1, 2018 – 6:30pm to 7:30pm

Pennywise PantryWith this interactive and hands-on tour, participants will learn how to shop for affordable, fresh, long-lasting, and nutritious foods at City Market. We will begin by exploring the Produce and Bulk departments, learning a simple method for finding the best value on fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans by paying attention to the price per pound. Then we will enter the Grocery aisles and Perishables coolers, to learn to become savvy label readers as we shop for nourishing, long-lasting foods that contain 5 ingredients or fewer. No matter what kind of diet you follow, these pennywise tools will help you stock your kitchen with a variety of healthy, local, and even organic foods and develop a better understanding of Co-op sales.

The No-Fuss Kitchen means just that; if you’re interested in taking the stress out of meal-planning and cooking, this is the class for you.

Crocheting Kitchen Pot Holders

Food EducationIn this class we will learn to how to crochet potholders. This class is geared towards beginners but the technique we will learn can be applied to future crocheting projects. This class will be taught by Braden Lalancette, who learned to crochet from his mother while in middle school about 10 years ago, and has been making hats, scarves and headbands ever since. Come join us and learn a new skill that will serve you well during these long, cold winter days. Each participant will leave the class with their very own potholder!

The DishAs our official state fruit, apples have become as quintessential as maple syrup to our state identity. From pick your own orchards to apple cider donuts, apple season marks the official arrival of fall in Vermont. Join us for a discussion and preview to Vermont Cider Week where we’ll explore this mighty giant. We’ll hear from orchardists, cider-makers, and apple enthusiasts about the importance of preserving heirloom varieties, the evolving palettes of cider drinkers, and the challenges and triumphs of apple production.

The Art and Science of Kombucha

Food EducationStart making kombucha at home! Kombucha is a fermentation of sweetened tea. In this class we’ll learn how to make it and also discuss why fermented foods are so beneficial. Participants will take home a “scoby” (a starter culture) to get started. This class will be led by Suzanna Bliss, Licensed Acupuncturist, Nutritionist, Educator, and Director of Bliss Healing Acupuncture in Montpelier.
