What is SMOP?
SMOP provides students and area residents the opportunity to bring clothing, books, household items, furniture, and non-perishable food items to this community recycling and swap event. This popular street swap encourages reuse, recycling, and overall better management of unwanted items during move-out each May. Items not claimed by community members during the event will be donated to local charities, including ReSOURCE, the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program, and the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf. Your support will help over 2,800 students move out of Burlington in a way that is positive for students, non-student neighbors, and the environment.

Volunteering at SMOP is a great way for you to meet students and community members, to give back to the Burlington community, and to be a part of a vibrant and fun event that has a tremendous positive impact on both students and area residents alike.

Thank You!

Volunteers will receive a SMOP volunteer hat along with free food (coffee, bagels, and ice cream!) – plus fun outside with the whole SMOP team!

Thank you in advance for whatever you are able to do, and please spread the word!

The Spring Move Out Project is a partnership of Burlington Code Enforcement, Burlington Community and Economic Development Office, UVM, Champlain College, Chittenden Solid Waste District, ReSOURCE, Casella, & Myers.
