Description:
Participate in the development and implementation of programs and activities to integrate sustainability into Ithaca College’s culture. Collaborate with students, faculty, staff, and administrators to provide knowledge, skills, and motivation for integrating sustainability values and practices into resource management, operations, facilities planning and design, personal behavior, and curriculum. Serve as the sustainability liaison with campus departments and outside agencies.
1. Work with the Director to develop and implement programs in support of the College’s strategic goals and objectives related to campus sustainability, including continued implementation of Talloires Declaration action steps; the Comprehensive Environmental Plan; the Climate Action Plan; the Office of Energy Management and Sustainability Strategic plan; and the IC20/20 goals related to campus sustainability; and recommend policy and organizational changes needed to advance sustainability initiatives.
2. Assist the Director in the development and maintenance of annual department budget(s), and participate in budget proposal preparation. Review and process utility bills, order office supplies, process purchase requisitions, travel requests, and expense reports, and enter data and information into the College on-line financial information system. Monitor and reconcile expenditure of funds, collect and compile data and prepare reports. Assist in creating financial projections and analysis of financial data to ensure accurate reporting. Set up and maintain office files, correspondence and reports required for record keeping and successful operation.
3. Identify sustainability initiatives and generate program ideas. Assess cost effectiveness, technical feasibility and acceptance by the Ithaca College community. Compile information about sustainability issues and initiatives, and develop and present implementation plans to the Director. Work with Ithaca College departments to implement sustainability plans.
4. Support sustainability and environmental education efforts, including developing and conducting classroom presentations, coordinating student projects, contributing to student research efforts, and working in conjunction with the College in regard to community efforts. Develop and foster student leadership programs related to sustainability, and foster leadership and experiential learning opportunities.
5. Develop and implement programs and training opportunities to educate students, faculty, and staff about campus sustainability efforts and the benefits of sustainable practices and to adopt behaviors that will promote a sustainable campus and community.
6. Produce Office of Energy Management and Sustainability publications and maintain the department website and social media sites. Prepare and deliver presentations. Foster communication and collaboration between various campus groups and share ideas regarding successful initiatives across campus. Market the Office of Energy Management and Sustainability and Ithaca College as a sustainability model and a learning laboratory for sustainability. Work with other college offices to publicize, promote, and communicate Ithaca College’s sustainability efforts.
7. Prepare grants and apply for energy and sustainability financial incentives and rebates.
8. Prepare regular and specialized reports and analysis regarding sustainability programs. Regularly conduct a sustainability audit, compile data, and prepare reports. Track and report progress toward sustainability goals using the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education “Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System” (AASHE STARS Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System) inventory tool. Respond to other external sustainability rating systems as appropriate.
9. Monitor the College’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and report progress per the College’s commitment to the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC).
10. Monitor the College’s waste stream to include collecting data and maintain records on all material brought to the landfill and recycled by the College. Recommend and implement strategies and processes for reducing waste. Develop and implement procedures for recycling and waste management in preparation for and during on-campus special events.
11. Participate in campus and community and other off-campus events involving environmental issues to support Ithaca College sustainability programs and activities.
12. Serve as a liaison for Ithaca College to sustainability-related organizations, committees and task groups externally; share examples and information with external entities about successful campus sustainability strategies; seek out opportunities for student experiential learning in partnership with external entities; provide sustainability leadership in higher education organizations.
13. Keep current with energy and sustainability laws, regulations, standards, products, and programs. Assist the Director in apprising the College of changes in laws/regulations that may affect college policies, require the implementation of new policies, and/or affect operating budgets.
14. Supervise, monitor the performance of, and delegate tasks to student assistants assigned to sustainability projects.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three years experience implementing environmental or sustainability programs; knowledge of sustainability issues and best practices; commitment to institutional and societal sustainability; experience in environmental initiatives and resource management, project management, partnership building, and educational outreach; excellent attention to detail, strong organizational, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; solid understanding of spreadsheets and data-driven reporting; commitment to diversity and ability to work effectively with all constituencies in a diverse institution required.
