Application Deadline Extended: Sustainability Across the Curriculum Leadership WorkshopApplications are being accepted through Nov. 13 for the Sustainability Across the Curriculum Leadership Workshop with Peggy Barlett, Jan. 7-8, at Emory University in Atlanta. For faculty leaders of all disciplines, workshops involve an intensive two days of presentations, exercises, discussions, outdoor place-based activities and planning. Participants reflect on their own roles in the transformation of higher education, receive readings and organizational materials, and share challenges and strategies with supportive fellow leaders. The extended deadline to apply is Nov. 13. |

OfficersA global alliance of higher education networks and associations developed the open letter that will be delivered to senior officials at the U.N. Climate Change Conference in December in Paris. The alliance invites institutions to sign the letter that urges decision-makers to acknowledge and support the vital role that universities and colleges play in addressing climate change and resiliency. |
Call for Chapters: Envisioning Futures for Environmental and Sustainability EducationThis edited collection invites educational practitioners and theorists to speculate on and craft visions for the future of environmental and sustainability education. Exploring what educational methods and practices might exist on the horizon, the editors seek contributions that leverage speculative inquiry to imagine how nascent scientific, technological, social, and ecological developments might perturb, disrupt, and/or transform the field of environmental education. All abstracts are due no later than Nov. 13. |
APPA Sustainable Award Call for ApplicationsAll APPA institutional members are invited to submit for APPA’s Sustainability Award in Facilities Management that is designed to recognize and advance sustainability excellence in educational facilities. This award recognizes the facilities management department that has integrated sustainable policies and practices throughout all facets of the organization and embedded them within the educational institution. Inventorying Plug Load Equipment and Assessing Plug Load Reduction Solutions on a University CampusA university campus presents a unique opportunity to understand plug load profiles across building types. In this study, an equipment inventory was performed in 220 buildings on Stanford University’s campus, totaling 8,901,911-square-feet of building space and encompassing lab buildings, office buildings, recreation facilities, public space and service buildings. Energy consumption estimates were developed from published values and used to evaluate the aggregate plug load energy consumption of this equipment by equipment type and by building type. |
Transformative Dialogues Journal: Sustainability Education and LeadershipThe new issue of Transformative Dialogues (Volume 8, Issue 2, September, 2015) is themed Sustainability in Post-secondary Education and Leadership. This international, peer-reviewed, open-source journal is a free resource. The State of Sustainability in Tertiary EducationA report on sustainability in tertiary education has recently been released by Environmental Association of Universities and College (EAUC), National Union of Students, University and College Union, and the College Development Network. The report is based on survey responses from 548 staff involved in sustainability in universities and colleges. The survey set out to identify how further and higher education institutions are responding to environmental sustainability and social responsibility challenges, as well as how staff perceive their institution’s efforts. The intention is to rerun the survey annually, producing an annual report that tracks perceptions and trends across tertiary education. |
Student Travel Grants for Urban Food Systems SymposiumThe Urban Food Systems Symposium happening June 22-25 at Kansas State University Olathe campus is offering at least six travel grants of $500 each to graduate and undergraduate students attending the conference. Students must have successfully submitted an abstract prior to applying for the grant. Deadline to submit an application for a travel grant is Nov. 24. |
Survey of 25 Energy-Efficient Colleges and UniversitiesElectricchoice.com, owned by Eisenbach Consulting, LLC, recognized 25 colleges and universities, out of approximately 5,300 in the U.S., that engage in energy-efficient practices to conserve energy and lessen their environmental impact. |
New Website: ‘Going Green Begins in the Classroom’This new website from tobecomeateacher.org provides an introduction on the importance of incorporating sustainability into schools and lists 15 strategies for doing so that include installing renewable energy, starting a recycling and/or composting program, focusing on indoor air quality, using natural cleaners, organizing carpools, and teaching the value of water conservation. |
