Sustainability Across the Curriculum Leadership WorkshopApplications are now open for the Sustainability Across the Curriculum workshop with Peggy Barlett, Jan. 78, 2016, at Emory University in Atlanta. For faculty leaders of all disciplines, workshops involve an intensive two days of presentations, exercises, discussions, outdoor place-based activities and planning. Participants also reflect on their own roles in the transformation of higher education, receive readings and organizational materials and share challenges and strategies with supportive fellow leaders. Deadline to apply is Nov. 6.
Apply for Clinton Global Initiative University 2016Applications are now being considered for acceptance to the Clinton Global Initiative University 2016 (CGI U 2016), which will take place at the University of California, Berkeley from April 1-3. CGI U is a forum for students, university representatives and topical experts to come together to discuss and develop innovative solutions to pressing global challenges. All applicants must be above the age of 18 and actively enrolled in an institution of higher education at the time of the meeting. Final application deadline is Dec. 1.
Extended Call for Applications: AASHE Governance PositionsApplications have been extended to Monday, Nov. 2 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern for one of four governance opportunities: AASHE Board of Directors, the AASHE Advisory Council, the STARS Steering Committee and the STARS Technical Advisors. After the application period closes, submissions will be reviewed. A portion of the board of directors positions will be elected directly by the membership. This change to the governance structure is in direct response to member feedback. The primary membership contact for your institution is the voting member. Please find and review your institution’s or organization’s primary contact. Changes or questions can be sent to membership@aashe.org.

2015 Sustainable Campus IndexThe 2015 Sustainable Campus Index highlights top-performing colleges and universities in 17 areas, as measured by the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS). The impact report spotlights best practices from over 50 U.S., Canadian and Mexican institutions that have submitted a STARS report in the last 12 months. Average trends in each impact area based on institution type and country are included. Participation in STARS surpassed 700 institutions in 2015, and annual reports submitted increased for a second year in a row. In January 2015, Universidad de Monterrey became the first institution outside the U.S. and Canada to earn a STARS rating. Submissions from Canadian institutions doubled in comparison to last year.
LEED Certification of Campus Buildings: A Cost-Benefit ApproachWritten by Erin Hopkins and published in The Journal of Sustainable Real Estate, this article analyzes Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified buildings within the higher education sector. Findings focused on the upfront premium and down the line energy savings from 16 institutions. The net present value, internal rate of return and discounted payback period were calculated to determine the financial feasibility of LEED certification.
Free Project Tracking Tool for APPA MembersThe Sustainable Endowments Institute is launching a new partnership with APPA that gives APPA members free access to the Green Revolving Investment Tracking System (GRITS). GRITS is a project-management web tool that allows users to track and analyze the energy, financial and carbon savings data from their energy and resource-efficiency projects, and access a library of over 1,150 projects completed by other GRITS users across the U.S. and Canada. While core features are available at no cost to institutions as part of this partnership, access to GRITS Unlimited, which allows users to input unlimited projects, create additional user accounts, and includes the ability to create comprehensive graphs from project data, will be available at a substantial discount if an institution decides to upgrade.
13th Annual Corporate Knights Better World MBA RankingThe 2015 Corporate Knights Better World MBA Ranking includes the 100 schools from the 2015 Financial Times Global MBA Ranking and other business schools that were invited to participate due to their track record in business sustainability education. These schools were assessed on three indicators: curriculum, institutes and centers, and faculty research. Data for these three indicators was collected from publicly available sources. Outreach was conducted to each of those schools for verification and confirmation prior to completion of the ranking.
