Internship at Shelburne Farms

MARKET GARDEN INTERNSHIP 2014

The internship program at the market garden is designed for current and post-college students to gain practical experience in the field of agricultural production.  Students can earn credit through their institutions while working and learning at Shelburne Farms Market Garden. Shelburne is seeking four motivated individuals to join the Market Garden Team for the 2014 growing season. They operate a 6-acre certified organic market garden that produces mixed vegetables, herbs, berries, and flowers for the Inn at Shelburne Farms, a staff farm-share, and the Shelburne Farmers’ Market. They work in a production based setting, but serve as a resource for the educational programs at the farm. They are committed to providing an educational and fun experience for all interns. An internship may last for a full season or part of a season, but will be determined on a case by case basis.

  • Eagerness for outdoor physical work
  • desire to learn organic gardening techniques through hands-on experience
  • ability to work independently and in a team
  • positive attitude, flexibility, curiosity, strong work ethic

Expectations:

  • write clear and obtainable personal goals and objectives for the internship detailing the skills you want to develop and the knowledge you want to gain.
  • Support the mission of Shelburne Farms by helping the market garden team grow high quality, organic vegetables, herbs, flowers, and fruit.
  • Complete all gardening tasks including: cultivating, weeding, mulching, harvesting, washing/packing/delivering produce, record-keeping, irrigating, pest management, transplanting, seeding, greenhouse work, and animal husbandry
  •  Assist the market garden team in providing students and farm guests with an inspirational and educational experience at the Market Garden.

Time Commitment:

  • April -October. Start and end dates are flexible.
  • Commit to working at least two full days (16 hours) or the equivalent per week
  • Attend farm orientation (1 day) and garden orientation (1 day)

Compensation:

  • 10% discount at Welcome Center and Inn
  •  Member of VT Museum and Gallery Alliance for the season.
  • Some food may be available seasonally: garden vegetables, eggs, staff cheese
  • Housing and payment are not provided. This is not an employment agreement, and Shelburne Farms does not provide compensation, reimbursement, Workers Compensation, or Health Care coverage for this position.
