Internship Description:
The Burlington School Food Project seeks a School Farm Intern to assist with the maintenance of several Burlington School District gardens including a new orchard. Vegetable production is the main focus of this position, but the ideal candidate will also act as a resource for youth education programs. The School Farm Production intern will work closely with the Farm to School Educators and Burlington School Food Project staff.
Under the guidance of the BSFP Farm to School team, the School Farm Production intern will:
● Oversee production at the half-acre Hunt Middle School Farm.
● Participate in the expansion of Burlington High School’s Farm, with a focus on
production and general garden upkeep.
● Supervise the general maintenance of the CP Smith Elementary orchard.
● Facilitate lessons and workshops with students about the technical aspects of vegetable production including topics of soil fertility, plant propagation, harvest, and maintenance.
By the end of the growing season, this internship will provide an individual with stronger food production skills and allow them to better administer hands on youth education.
Background:
The Hunt Middle School Farm (formerly the Healthy City Youth Farm) is a hands- on, farm-to-school program designed to boost physical activity, increase healthy lifestyle choices, and teach basic cooking and gardening skills to students in the Burlington School District. The heart of the program is a half-acre production garden located on school grounds where vegetables are grown and harvested for the school cafeterias.
The Burlington High School Farm is a project in-progress. With a functioning glass greenhouse and pre-existing garden beds, BHS will become the new site for our High School Farm. This spring we will break ground on a half-acre piece of land and premiering a new credited Urban Agriculture class in collaboration with BHS teachers.
Skills:
We are seeking a highly self-motivated individual with significant agriculture experience. Applicants must demonstrate a strong work ethic and be able to interact with the public in a professional and courteous manner. Experience working with youth is extremely helpful for this position, but not required. The ability to sustain high energy levels in all conditions (hot, cold, high humidity, rain) while engaging students and performing physically demanding work is essential.
