All people deserve access to adequate, nutritious food. The complicated and provocative question for the fourth annual UVM Food Systems Summit on June 16-17 is how to provide this basic human right.

Globally and in Vermont, the stakes are profound. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, one in nine people worldwide are chronically hungry. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 13 percent of Vermont households are food insecure.  The challenge of “feeding the world” is complicated by income inequality, environmental constraints, technological limitations, climate change and a growing world population. This multi-dimensional challenge calls for interdisciplinary responses. Read more

The UVM Food Systems Summit is an annual event drawing scholars, practitioners, and food systems leaders to engage in dialogue on the pressing food systems issues facing our world.

The 2015 Summit is organized in collaboration with the Vermont Law School Center for Agriculture and Food Systems.

Related Events

The Breakthrough Leaders Professional Certificate Program for Sustainable Food Systems will take place at UVM June 1 – June 19. Participation in the Summit is included as part of the program.

The Vermont Food Systems Study Tour is a 3-credit course that will introduce students to the VT food system through a 21-day tour and study at six Vermont colleges, May 31 – June 20, 2015. Participation in the Summit is included as part of the program.
