On October 22, the eco reps of Champlain celebrated National Campus Sustainability Day by making an impact on the school community. Eco representatives tabled in the atrium of the IDX Student Life Center, where students could walk up and take the pledge by dipping their thumb in green ink (giving you a green thumb) and stamping it on the branch they pledge to commit to changing on the campus sustainability tree, such as recycling, transportation, energy, food, or involvement in the community.

Champlain also partnered with Ben and Jerry’s to receive pins and pamphlets for people to read and learn more about reducing our impact on the environment.

I spoke with Nicole Stratis about the event and why Champlain takes part.  “We’ve got a few events happening during the month that are meant to teach (the Champlain community) about becoming more sustainable and reduce their impact on the environment. It’s important for people to become informed.” she says. In addition to this tabling, an option at late night in the cafeteria tonight will be fair trade certified chocolate-dipped bananas.

This event was met with relative success and the eco reps plan to continue this in the future.
