Kristin Wolf, Core Faculty member and Champlain Apiarist is looking for more plants for the newly re-planted pollinator garden behind Perry Hall. 

Her general criteria were native, perennial, with variable bloom times. The bioswale is bone dry with unplanted topsoil, so the plants need to tolerate full sun and dry conditions initially until there is shade and better moisture retention.

The initial list is below. I switched out Joe Pye Weed and Beardtogue for Russian Sage and Calamint because it was too dry. She also added some 3 native grasses (two Panicum species) as habitat. She just wants to fill in the garden with any plant that has pollinator value to get the space established before the sumac infiltrates.

Early season bloom

Partridge Pea (Chamaecrista fasciculate) – yellow

Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) – purple

Tall White Beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis) – white

Ohio Spiderwort (Tradescantia ohiensis) – blue

Mid season

Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) – pink

Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa) – is this the one that they use as a host plant? – orange

Joe Pye weed (Eupatoriadelphus maculatus) – pink

Great Blue Lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica) – blue

Late season

Purple Coneflower ­(Echinacea purpurea) – purple

Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) – white

Goldenrod (Solidago speciosa OR nemoralis) – yellow

Smooth Blue Aster (Symphyotrichum leave) – blue
