LEND A HAND. VOLUNTEER – United Way’s Volunteer Connection site is set up to help connect agencies and volunteers. Agencies are working hard to navigate volunteering during this time, but opportunities are increasing. Here is a link for Volunteer Connection to learn more about these and other opportunities.

THANKSGIVING COOKS NEEDED – Burlington Dismas House provides transitional housing for newly released prisoners. Theywill be providing a wonderful Thanksgiving meal for residents and guests at their Buell Street and East Allen Street locations and are looking for volunteers to help make this a memorable event.  11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Volunteers are encouraged to enjoy the meal with the residents. 

LET’S DO LUNCH – Mercy Connections is once again doing their Community Lunch on Thursdays and is looking for volunteers to help prep delivered food and serve.  Shifts are roughly from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  Upcoming dates are: November 3, November 10, a special Harvest/Thanksgiving meal on November 17, December 1, December 8, and a holiday meal on December 15.  Contact Maeve Keating at mkeating@mercyconnections.org.

BE AN ADVOCATE – RESULTS is a movement of committed everyday people who their voices in local communities calling for solutions to poverty here and around the world.  They are inviting volunteers to spend a few hours a month taking advocacy actions such as speaking with policymakers about problems and in the community and solutions that can make a difference publishing media to call attention to injustice and connecting with others in the community to build a powerful network of advocates to work together to end poverty.  Learn more at www.results.org/volunteer.

THANKSGIVING DINNERS – The Milton Family Community Center will be preparing Thanksgiving dinner baskets for those who might otherwise go without.  They are looking for donations of food items to help fill the baskets: stuffing mixes, jarred or canned turkey gravy, cranberry sauce, canned vegetables, fresh, canned, or instant potatoes, fresh or canned sweet potatoes, biscuit, muffin or quick bread mixes, browning or cake mixes, pie crusts and canned filling.  A gift of a $10.00 Hannaford gift card will help to purchase turkeys to complete the baskets.  Dropoff days are November 9 through 21 at the Center, 23 Villemaire Lane in Milton. 

MENTORS NEEDED – Spectrum Youth and Family Services is looking for volunteers to serve as mentors for youth ages 12-22.  If you are a responsible adult in Chittenden or Grand Isle County and have reliable transportation, here’s the chance to spend some quality time with a young person who is waiting to be connected to a healthy, compassionate mentor.  Mentoring pairs can enjoy biking, a UVM sports game, a show at the Flynn or many other mutually enjoyable activities.  Contact Rebecca Majoya at 802-864-7423, Ext. 216 or email rmajoya@spectrumvt.org.

ON THE BOARD – Peer Teaching and Learning (PTL) is expanding and enhancing its Board of Directors and Board Committees with volunteers from communities in Vermont. They are looking for various skill sets and diverse age, geographic location, learning styles, gender, race, and ethnicity.  The Board meets via Zoom 7 times a year with an annual in person meeting.  PTL provides advanced learning opportunities for underserved populations, primarily adults with disabilities.  Board members are encouraged to visit any of the 11 Vermont campuses to experience the unique opportunity being provided to students.  Contact Stephen Tavella at 802-424-7717 or email executivedirector@peerteachingandlearning.org.
