Fashion Revolution Month

Dear FTPHL Community,

Last month, Frankie from Equal Exchange joined us at our general body to help lead and facilitate a different foray into fair trade advocacy work. The group came together to work on a campaign to lobby local grocery stores to carry more Equal Exchange products and products from other fair trade brands. It was a great opportunity for us to experiment with different outreach tactics, and we’ve already started receiving some feedback from the targeted stores! The meeting served as a virtual “co-working” session and forum to share ideas (and computer screens) to help each other out. We look forward to continuing this advocacy work and creating more spaces for fair trade co-working! Follow along in #community-partnerships on Slack.

This month we ask ourselves the question: “Who Made My Clothes?” FTPHL will be hosting two ethical fashion brands to showcase their products and share their story: Wearwell is an online marketplace that curates stylish clothes from sustainable brands based on impact criteria from Fair Trade, GOTS Certified, BlueSign, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, and B Corp. Mushmina is a Moroccan based brand that partners with more than 150 artisans to support their work and community. The night will consist of an introduction to the brands, a discussion with the guests, and a chance to win one of 400 dollar worth of gift cards!

Next month, save the date – May 8, 2021 – FTPHL goes global with a partnership with Fair Trade Musashino in Tokyo for World Fair Trade Day.

Read on below for more details!

Sincerely,
FTPHL Steering Committee

FTPHL Fashion Survey

As we embark on Fashion Revolution month to learn more about the fashion industry and “who made my clothes?,” we want to learn more about our own community’s connection to fashion and our consumption habits.

This is a way for us to examine our own behaviors and see how we as a community can endeavor to make choices that support a more sustainable, equitable fashion industry.

World Fair Trade Day 2021

We are very excited to share that next month, for World Fair Trade Day, we will be partnering with Fair Trade Musashino in Tokyo for an intercultural Fair Trade event!

Fair Trade Philadelphia has a special connection to Japan; the founder of FTPHL, Yoko Barnes, is originally from Japan and former member Yurie Watanabe, who was active with FTPHL while living in Philadelphia, is now back in Japan.

Yurie is a part of a local Fair Trade advocacy group called Fair Trade Musashino in Tokyo and helped facilitate this wonderful cross-cultural event in honor of WFTD. We will have an opportunity to share the work we’ve been doing in Philly over the past few years and learn about how Fair Trade Musashino is engaged with the Fair Trade movement in Japan!

This event will be facilitated in both English and 日本語!

FTPHL World Fair Trade Day
Saturday, May 8 @ 8:00pm Philadelphia time
Sunday, May 9 @ 9:00am Tokyo time

It is also an important opportunity to come together as a community, share our joys and challenges, reinvigorate ourselves, and be uniquely inspired, which is more important than ever.

The Fair Trade Federation Conference and Expo is attended by buyers, employees, owners, and advocates from ethical, conventional, and fair trade wholesalers, retailers, and organizations from the US, Canada, Europe, and more.
