Durham College Receives $14.7M for Energy Upgrades
Provincial government funding through the Greenhouse Gas Campus Retrofits Program will be used to install a $9.1 million ground source heating and cooling system at the Oshawa campus. Additional upgrades of existing facilities, including the installation of high-efficiency HVAC systems, new and upgraded building automation systems, and LED lighting, will cost approximately $1.4 million. About $4 million of the government support will take the form of an eligible interest-free loan, uses for which are being explored.

Durham U to Divest From Fossil Fuels
(U.K.) Following a year-long review of divestment options and the impact divestment would have on the university’s finances, the university’s highest governing body recently decided to withdraw financial investments from companies involved in fossil fuel extraction. These currently total less than $2.1 million (1.5 million British pounds).

Sustainability Across the Curriculum Workshop at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

This intensive two-day faculty development program brings together faculty from all fields to explore the shifts in pedagogy needed to incorporate sustainability concepts, problems, or solutions into new or existing courses. Registration is open through April 27. University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is one of 13 regional AASHE Centers for Sustainability Across the Curriculum.

AASHE Sustainability Awards: Call for Submissions

The AASHE Sustainability Awards provide global recognition to the individuals and organizations leading the higher education sustainability movement. Submissions are accepted through May 11.

International Conference on Sustainable Development Call for Abstracts

The Global Association of Master’s in Development Practice Programs, in collaboration with the Sustainable Development Solutions Network, will hold the sixth annual International Conference on Sustainable Development from September 26-28, 2018, at Columbia University in New York City. The conference theme is Breaking Down Silos: Fostering Collaborative Action on the SDGs. May 1 is the abstract submission deadline.

Rinse, Recycle, Repeat College Campus Competition

Garnier and DoSomething.org invite students to participate in the Rinse, Recycle, Repeat campaign and college campus competition, which aims to educate consumers about the importance of recycling empty beauty product containers. Interested students register to participate, decorate a recycling bin, collect their empty containers, and send them to TerraCycle. The prize is a $5,000 scholarship.

Towards Green Campus Operations: Energy, Climate and Sustainable Development Initiatives at Universities

With contributions from researchers and practitioners in campus sustainability, this book seeks to introduce methodological approaches and projects that integrate sustainable development into campus design and operations by promoting information, ideas and experiences from execution of research, teaching and projects on campus greening and design.
