Bike/Walk month is coming right up! Local Motion has a lot going on, and we’ll be needing your help!! Here’s what’s on tap…
Cycle the City “Flaggers” Needed this Weekend
When: May /27, arrive 8:30, flag from 10am-noon
What: Direct riders at intersections as a Flagger
Wondering what a Flagger is? They’re someone who makes sure that people don’t get lost! In other words, they’re angels in neon vests, saints in reflective wear, and basically an incredibly important part of a ride with a complex route.
We need a couple of people to help guide cyclists onto the correct route for our Cycle the City Ride this Sunday, 4/27, from 8:30-1:00. It’s a sweet gig: you’ll be hanging out in the sunshine, providing much needed support to grateful cyclists. We’ll give you your location, and a gorgeous neon reflective vest, and you’ll be off, making everyone’s ride smoother and happier.
You won’t be on the road for the entire time. Arrive at Perkins Pier at 8:30 to get your marching orders, hang out, drink coffee, eat delicious food, and enjoy a lazy morning. Your actual flagging duties will commence at around 10.
You’ll need 1) a love of sunshine, fresh air, and helping people and 2) a way to get to your designated spot (bike, car, or a sturdy pair of legs).

Bike to Work Day Bagel Benefactors Needed!
When: May 16 from 7:00-9:00am at 5 locations around Burlington
What: Give bagels to bike commuters on National Bike to Work Day!
Do you smile every time you see a bicycle commuter? Have you ever wished you could give a huge “THANKS, AWESOME PERSON!” to those special folks, but they were moving too fast for you to even throw them a smile?
Well, now’s your chance!!! On May 16, from 7:00-9:00, we’ll be at 5 different locations, armed with bagels, coffee and laudatory high-fives!

Help Give Kids Wings! Learn to Ride Event!
When: May 24 from 1:00-3:00pm at Leddy Park
What: Help with helmet decorating station or fit bikes to kids
There is no better way to celebrate Bike/Walk Month than by teaching a kid how to ride! Learning to ride a bike can be very difficult (for both kids and parents!)
We have a fleet of balance bikes (thanks to Bike Recycle Vermont), and, in partnership with Burlington Parks and Recreation, we’ll be running a learn-to-ride class for Vermont families at Leddy Park. This event will be free to Local Motion members! For non-members, it will $20 for families who pre-register, and $40 for families who drop in on the day.
We will need tons of volunteers to help us with the helmet decorating/game station (for the kids who already know how to ride), and we’ll need bike wranglers for the Learn to Ride class (basically fitting bikes to kids). The event will be on May 24 from 1:00-3:00.

The Surest Sign of Spring–Secure Bike Parking!
When: All summer on Saturdays at Farmer’s Market & Waterfront events
What: Help park bicycles, “it’s like a coat check for your bike”
Spring is here and Secure Bicycle Parking is back for its 4th season! This amazing program would not be possible without the many volunteers who donate their time to this program.
We depend upon a dedicated, fun-loving, and active group of volunteers from May through October. We’ll offer volunteer opportunities on weekends at the Farmers’ Market as well as events at Battery Park, Waterfront Park and new for this year Summervale.

Graffiti for Good Kicks Off on Bike/Walk Month
When: Weekdays or weekends — propose a day and time!
What: Spraychalk stencils on Burlington’s streets, group activity
Maybe you’re walking down the sidewalk, texting a friend. You’re about to step out onto the street, and right below your feet you see something unexpected…“Stop Texting and Look Up!” Or maybe you’re flying down the hill on your bike to do some shopping downtown. You’re about to cross an intersection, and you see the message…“Bikes Stop Too.”
It’s on-the-street guerrilla messaging, Local Motion-style! With help from a whole lot of volunteers, we’re giving Burlington a nudge about safe streets. Help us tag the streets (legally!), and be a part of this cool project! We’re debuting some new stencils this year, so come and check us out!
We are entirely flexible about dates & times. This is much better as a GROUP volunteer activity, so bring 4+ friends!
