Vermont Environmental Summit – November 9

VPIRG invites you to join us at the Vermont Environmental Summit on Saturday, November 9th at Vermont Technical College in Randolph to learn about the top campaigns happening in the state today- from labeling GMO foods to stopping the Fracked Gas Pipeline to expanding clean energy and more.  Dig in on strategic campaign planning with long-time advocate and environmental leader Paul Burns, who got his start as a student activist (more years ago than he’d care to share).

It’ll be a great day filled with enthusiastic speakers, inspiring workshops, and good local food!

Student registration is just $15 and includes breakfast, lunch, and a free ride. Space is limited on the bus heading down for the day-long event – departing the Davis Center flagpole at 8:15 am. Students in need of a ride can reserve one here:

Check out the description for the Student Organizing Workshop:

Student Workshop: Strategic Organizing for Change “Sit-ins are out, toga parties are in.” That was the media’s take on the transition of student activism from the 60s & 70s to the 80s & 90s.  What will this generation of college students be known for?

You’re inheriting a planet on the edge of collapse, an economy built on inequality, huge student loan debt without great job prospects…it can make you want to tune out and just play Candy Crush.

Yet, you have the power to organize for change in ways seldom before imagined. To succeed, we need to work smarter, not just harder.

Vermont students are uniquely positioned to lead the way. Our progressive democratic and higher education institutions have the potential to step up and lead on solutions to our generation’s biggest challenges, but won’t do so without action being demanded.

In this workshop, long-time environmental leader, Paul Burns (who got his start as a student activist), will share the fundamentals of power. Using a case study of a current campaign, he’ll shed light on who has power and how to influence them by planning a winning strategy.
