VTIPL CONFERENCE: Saturday, November 16, 2013

Join us for Vermont Interfaith Power and Light’s conference, “Facing Climate Chaos with Hope and Action: Empowering People of Faith and Spirit,” on Nov. 16. Dr. Stephanie Kaza, an author, practicing Buddhist, UVM Environmental Studies Program Director and Professor, will be the Keynote Speaker. The conference will be at First Congregational Church (38 S. FILM: Tipping Point Showings in W. Brattleboro, Greensboro
VTIPL will show “Tipping Point: The Age of the Oil Sands” at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church, 29 South Street, West Brattleboro on Wed., Aug. 21st, 6 pm. It will also be shown at Greensboro United Church of Christ, 165 Wilson St., on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 7:30 pm. Following this 90-minute CBC film, there will be a discussion with information about the pipeline in the Northeast Kingdom. A free will offering will benefit VTIPL. Questions? Email info@vtipl.org

CLIMATE JUSTICE ACTIVIST to SPEAK at GODDARD
Native American climate justice activist, Clayton Thomas-Muller will speak at Goddard’s Haybarn Theater on Sunday, Aug. 25, 7 pm. His talk is titled “Tar Sands, Unconventional Oil and Pipelines: Indigenous Resistance and Struggles for Sovereignty in North America.” He will tell about Indigenous Peoples’ movement to defend against encroachments by the fossil fuel industry, and about building an inclusive global movement for energy and climate justice. EMERGENT UNIVERSE ORATORIO
The premier of this new choral and orchestral composition by Composer Sam Guarnaccia will be held at the Shelburne Farms Breeding Barn on Sunday, Sept. 15, 3 pm. Also featured will be the magnificent series of paintings, “Endless Spring,” by Visual Artist Cameron Davis. The 90-minute Oratorio weaves together music and spoken word. Inspired by the “Journey of the Universe” film, this is an experience not to miss. Dress for the weather- the Breeding Barn is not heated. The event is free; donations are gratefully accepted. DERBY LINE CHURCH EVENT ADDRESSES CLIMATE
Iowa State Senator Rob Hogg spoke at First Universalist Parish in Derby Line last Sunday and gave out copies of his book “America’s Climate Century: What Climate Change Means for America in the 21st Century and What Americans Can Do about it.” Church member Ed Helm reported on the event and said, “Sen. Hogg predicted that climate change will now be either ‘bad’ for America and the world’s future, or very, very ‘bad.’” Our response now will decide which result we get. Andy Simon from 350Vermont joined Sen. Hogg and spoke about the Portland Montreal Pipe Line and the threat of tar sands oil. Click below for reviews and more about Sen. HOME WEATHERIZATION SKILLSHOPS
Efficiency Vermont is sponsoring a series of skillshops across the state for the homeowner who wants some training for a do- it-yourself way of improving home energy efficiency. Each of the six skillshops, on Saturdays in September and October, will run from 9 am to 3 pm. They will be held in Middlebury, Manchester, Brattleboro, Essex, Barre, and Thetford. SENATE to TAKE UP ENERGY EFFICIENCY BILL
The Senate’s Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act, SB 1392, sponsored by Ohio Sen. Rob Portman and New Hampshire Sen Jeanne Shaheen, is likely to be brought to the Senate floor on September 10. If passed, this long overdue bill will help our country improve energy efficiency is many ways.
