Georgia Tech Pilots Using Wastewater to Grow Vegetables
A U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture grant totaling $5 million over five years will enable the university to pilot a hydroponic growing system using domestic wastewater extracted from the campus sewer system. The overall goal is to show that using the nutrients and water resources from domestic wastewater in an urban controlled environment agriculture system is socially, environmentally and financially sustainable and can easily be replicated in other cities.

Virginia Commonwealth U Plants Trees in Local Community for Carbon Offset Credits
A project to plant dozens of trees this month in Richmond’s Carver area will make the neighborhood a greener and more walkable community, while offsetting the carbon footprint of the university as the trees grow. The Carver Tree Project has brought together resources from VCU, nonprofits and state agencies to plant and maintain 75 trees in the neighborhood. VCU will claim carbon offset credits for the new trees under a peer-reviewed program developed at Duke University.

EPA College & University Green Power Challenge

Throughout the 2018-19 academic year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership will track and rank U.S. collegiate athletic conferences based on combined green power usage. The program includes any collegiate athletic conference in the U.S. with at least two U.S. EPA Green Power Partners and an aggregate green power purchase of at least 10 million kilowatt-hours.

Call for Proposals: 2019 Environmental Education & Communication Conference

Taking place on May 10 – 12, 2019, at the University of Saskatchewan, conference organizers are seeking proposals for presentations, workshops and posters. The conference theme is Action on Climate Change Through Education. The conference aims is to increase action on climate change through education by bringing together educators, students, policy makers, researchers and community members. The deadline for proposals is Jan. 15.

Call for Proposals: New England Farm to Institution Summit

The New England Farm to Institution Summit, happening April 2 – 4, 2019, at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, encourages session proposals that will help participants gain inspiration to set and achieve bold goals and connect farm to institution work to the bigger picture in regional and national food system work, develop new skills, continue to build relationships, and learn about innovative farm-to-institution strategies.

This publication examines aspects of reducing the ecological footprint in libraries’ operations and the social role and responsibility of libraries as leaders in environmental sustainability. Also discussed are the theoretical background and practical applications of contributions made by worldwide libraries to the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.
