Film and Cross-Divisional Discussion: “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks”

Greetings, Community!

On Monday, November 13th from 5:30pm – 8:30pm faculty from all five divisions (SSB, Core, ITS, CCM and EHS) will hold a cross-disciplinary discussion about the HBO film The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (2017). We will first view the film together and then hold a dialogue that models inter-discourse analysis. That is, faculty will analyze the story through the theoretical lenses; e.g., race theory, biology, critical journalism, and sustainable ethics, by which their disciplines are informed. Please see the flyer that is attached (created by SSB student John Tyner).
This event will bring diverse perspectives together for a panel-led discussion about issues exposed by Henrietta Lacks’ story. This program intends to engage students, faculty and staff with an integrative approach to examining themes, such as ethics, health science, scientific literacy, immersion journalism, race and class disparities (Skloot, 2017).  http://rebeccaskloot.com/the-immortal-life/

Looking forward to seeing what might emerge by our community thinking together.

Yours,

The Integrative Life of Henrietta Lacks Committee
