Dickinson College Achieves Carbon Neutrality

Dickinson recently achieved its carbon neutrality goal by cutting its greenhouse gas emissions 25 percent from 2008 levels and purchasing carbon offsets to mitigate the remaining emissions. From 2020 forward, all the activities included in the college’s carbon footprint—like heating and cooling the campus, use of vehicles and air travel—will result in zero net emissions of greenhouse gases.

An Interdisciplinary Approach to Integrating the UN SDGs Within your Course
During this day-long, online workshop, participants will learn what faculty in Canadian colleges are doing to integrate the U.N. SDGs in their courses in a meaningful way using place-based learning. Best practices, resources and tools will be provided to participants, as well as techniques to address climate anxiety in the classroom. Participants should be able to develop one sustainability-based learning activity or assignment. The deadline to register is May 25. Fleming College is an AASHE Center for Sustainability Across the Curriculum.

Coping with Climate Anxiety in the Classroom and for Yourself
This online workshop aims to help faculty understand their own emotions around eco-grief and eco-anxiety in order to create and hold space for their students to integrate and process hard realities about climate change impacts. A short overview of research on climate change education and pedagogies will be followed by four experiential activities that can be used in the classroom. The two-hour workshop is being offered twice: May 14 and June 11. The University of Hawaiʻi is an AASHE Center for Sustainability Across the Curriculum.

AASHE Member Discount: Discount on Climate Change & Health Certificate
Students, staff and faculty at AASHE member institutions are eligible for a 10 percent discount off an 18-week online certificate through Yale University’s School of Public Health that teaches about tools to address the health impacts of climate change.

Call for Volunteer Judges: AASHE Sustainability Awards
AASHE seeks judges to help evaluate 2020 AASHE Sustainability Awards submissions. Judges can expect to spend approximately 5-15 hours reviewing applications. The deadline to respond is May 15.

Earth Day at 50: Teach-Outs
To honor the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the University of Michigan has organized a Teach-Out, an intergenerational and interdisciplinary conversation about what sustainability means across different sectors, disciplines and lived experiences. Participants will explore themes related to global sustainability efforts, climate change and environmental justice. The Teach-Out is available for free from April 6-30.

Rachel Carson Council Fellowship Program
The Rachel Carson Council Fellowship program trains fellows to do environmental organizing and advocacy work on their campus and in their community while gaining important grassroots organizing skills. The fellowship is for the 2020-21 academic year and offers a $2,000 stipend. Applications are due May 1.

NWF EcoLeaders Equity & Justice Graduate Student Research Fellowship
The NWF EcoLeaders Equity and Justice Fellow will support the growth and development of EcoLeaders and EcoCareers programs based on research of best practices in the field, stakeholder engagement, and the development of a proposal for strategies moving forward. Fellows receive a $3,000 stipend. The fellowship begins in May and lasts for about 4-6 months. The deadline to submit is April 20.

The International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories is offering last year’s conference presentations free of charge to anyone to aid distance learning and education about lab challenges, technologies and case studies at research institutions.

Land Ethics Curriculum Resources
These resources form the Aldo Leopold Foundation explore land ethics generally and specifically through Aldo Leopold’s articulation of a “land ethic” and can be used either as standalone elements such as a film, video or book in your course, or they can build upon each other.
