Your October Digest from CSWD

The Digest from CSWD: Food for action.
Happy Fall and soon to be Halloween!
Halloween is one of my favorite times of year. Halloween means fall colors, parties, costumes, candy AND pumpkins!

Here are some great ways to REUSE or dispose of your Halloween pumpkins.
Eat them
Hollow out your pumpkin for carving then use the pulp and seeds for all typed of sweet and savory goodies. Here is a fun video on possible recipes.
Compost them
All CSWD Drop-Off Centers take undecorated or painted pumpkins for composting. Just toss them into the food scraps bins. Please remove any lights or candles from inside first.
You can also toss them into your backyard compost. I pitched mine into my garden last year and this season – much to my surprise – up sprung a PUMPKIN!
Feed them to livestock
Check with your local farmer before pitching them over the fence but pumpkins are very nutritious for many kinds of livestock. Make sure the pumpkins are not rotting, painted or coated in candle wax.
Hope you all get a chance to get out and Trick or Treat this year!

CSWD Commentary:
Why we don’t want your cup in our compost
compostables
Effective Jan. 1, 2022, CSWD facilities will no longer accept any compostable food ware at our organics diversion facility or in the food scrap bins at our Drop-Off Centers. The role of compostables in our compost is a complicated tale.
Michele Morris, Director of Communications and Special Projects wrote a recent VT Digger commentary explaining why CSWD came to to this difficult decision.
