U California Santa Cruz to Construct 2 MW Solar Canopy & Battery Bank
In an effort to reduce its carbon footprint, the university will construct a 2-megawatt solar parking canopy and energy storage system. The system is projected to save the campus $6 million on its energy bill.

Second Nature Receives $90K From Ray C. Anderson Fdn
The NextGen Committee of the Ray C. Anderson Foundation has awarded a $90,000 grant to Second Nature, which will be used to provide resources for colleges and universities that have signed Second Nature’s Presidents’ Climate Leadership Commitments and are ready to move from the initial administrative commitment stage to measurable climate action within the next calendar year. Second Nature aims to enable multiple universities to complete a large-scale, aggregated procurement of clean energy in 2019 through a power purchase agreement.

Discussion on Role of Business in Education for Sustainable Development

Business Fights Poverty is hosting a live written discussion with a panel of experts to discuss the role of business in education and training for sustainable development. The Washington Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference (WOHESC) is a platform for inspiring change, facilitating action, and promoting collaboration related to sustainability within the region’s higher education institutions. Conversation, workshops, and networking opportunities will empower participants to advance environmental performance at Washington and Oregon State institutions of higher education. Any person from an AASHE member institution or organization can receive a 30 percent discount on registration through Feb. 27.

Patagonia Case Competition

Patagonia and the Berkeley Haas Center for Responsible Business are partnering to host the fourth annual Patagonia Case Competition. Graduate students from across the world tackle the interconnected business and sustainability aspects of a current, real-life issue facing the outdoor gear retailer Patagonia. First place teams win $15,000, second $5,000 and third place $2,500. The deadline for team sign-up is Jan. 13 and case proposals are due Feb. 10.

IEN Case Study: Sustainable Investing at Arizona State University

This case study, produced and published by Intentional Endowments Network, discusses the university’s move toward sustainable investing, specifically how analysis of sustainable investing strategies allow the foundation to fulfill its fiduciary duty while aligning with the university’s values and sustainability leadership.

Green Guy Podcast: University of Carolina Charlotte Campus & Community Engagement

University of North Carolina Charlotte’s sustainability officer, Mike Lizotte, joined the College Sustainability Summit Series to talk about the award-winning sustainability programs on campus, student engagement, collaborations with the business community and the city of Charlotte.

New Issue: Sustainability: The Journal of Record

Reporting on the implementation of sustainability programs, initiatives and practices in higher education and industry, the most recent issue of Sustainability: The Journal of Record focuses on China and includes a Michigan Sustainability Case. Michigan Sustainability Cases is an initiative of the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability that produces case studies for sustainability education. This case explores the largest hydroelectric power station in the world, the Three Gorges Dam in China.
