Sustainability Faculty Fellows Program at UVM – Open to Champlain College faculty

We have a wonderful opportunity for up to two Champlain faculty to participate in  the UVM Sustainability Faculty Fellows Program this year. The Academic Connections committee of Sustain Champlain is hoping to implement something similar in the future, so stay tuned. In the meantime, please consider applying to the UVM program:

UVM Sustainability Faculty Fellows Program

You are invited to apply to participate in the sixth UVM Sustainability Faculty Fellows Program. This fellowship is supported by the Office of the Provost. We are seeking faculty from diverse backgrounds, disciplines and perspectives.

The program seeks to develop a learning community—a multidisciplinary faculty cohort engaged in a yearlong exploration of sustainability, the scholarship of teaching, learning, collaboration and community building.

The Goals of this Fellows Program
  • Create a community of faculty who are committed to integrating interdisciplinary approaches to sustainability into the UVM curriculum
  • Enhance the understanding of sustainability concepts among faculty and students, particularly those not trained in environmental fields
  • Explore teaching and course design strategies that will engage students in sustainability from a multidisciplinary approach

The cornerstone of the program is a two-day January institute, held at scenic Shelburne Farms and UVM’s GreenHouse Residential Hall. The program will be rooted in our campus and regional landscape. Fellows will engage in a rich mix of dialogue, reflection, writing, and critical thinking to explore how sustainability concepts can be integrated into their teaching.

Five major topics will be addressed:

  • Definitions of sustainability
  • Course design strategies
  • Interdisciplinary thinking and teaching
  • Student learning and attitudes about sustainability
  • UVM’s sustainability learning outcomes
Expectations for Fellows

Fellows will be expected to:

  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for developing interdisciplinary partnerships in sustainability
  • Participate in a two-day training institute, January 8 and 9, 2015
  • Attend at least two discussion workshops across the academic year
  • Redesign or enhance a course to integrate concepts of environmental sustainability
  • Evaluate the redesigned course to gauge attitudes and knowledge regarding sustainability
