Food EducationBrot Bakery was founded by Heike Meyer, bakeress and food lover. Growing up in bread-centered Germany, Heike developed a taste for good bread and pastries early on, strictly requesting only the heartiest whole grain breads for her Kindergarten lunch box and developing her first pastry recipe (an apple cake that was barely edible) at age 5. Join us for a tour of the bakehouse and an afternoon of hands-on baking and eating.

The Art and Science of Kombucha

Food EducationStart making kombucha at home! Kombucha is a fermentation of sweetened tea. In this class we’ll learn how to make it and also discuss why fermented foods are so beneficial. Participants will take home a “scoby” (a starter culture) to get started. This class will be led by Suzanna Bliss, Licensed Acupuncturist, Nutritionist, Educator, and Director of Bliss Healing Acupuncture in Montpelier.

Pennywise Pantry Tour

Pennywise PantryWith this interactive and hands-on tour, participants will learn how to shop for affordable, fresh, long-lasting, and nutritious foods at City Market. We will begin by exploring the Produce and Bulk departments, learning a simple method for finding the best value on fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans by paying attention to the price per pound. Then we will enter the Grocery aisles and Perishables coolers, to learn to become savvy label readers as we shop for nourishing, long-lasting foods that contain 5 ingredients or fewer. No matter what kind of diet you follow, these pennywise tools will help you stock your kitchen with a variety of healthy, local, and even organic foods and develop a better understanding of Co-op sales.

Seed Saving for Kids

Food EducationJoin KidsGardening for a fun, engaging lesson on the how and why of seed saving. In this hands-on class, you’ll learn how to save seeds from tomatoes, peppers, and lettuce. Bring some plants from your garden, or leave them at home—we’ll have plenty on hand! We’ll design seed packets to hold your seeds until next season, and distribute tips on how and when to plant your seeds next year.

This class will take place inside the Children’s Discovery Area at the South End store, and will be led by garden educators from KidsGardening.

The Power of
Prebiotics and Probiotics

Food EducationProbiotics, whether in the form of manufactured supplements or fermented foods, are increasingly recognized as beneficial additions to a balanced diet. What exactly are probiotics though, and how do they differ from prebiotics, which is another term we’re starting to hear more regularly? Join Dr. Eric Garza, a food systems instructor at the University of Vermont and local health and wellness enthusiast, for a talk that will explore the differences between probiotics and prebiotics and the benefits of both. This will be an interactive talk, so questions are encouraged.

A Mosaic of Flavor:
Burundian Isupu Gitoke Kibisi and
I Biraya Ninyama

Mosaic of FlavorThis monthly series is a collaboration with the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program. In October, we will make two traditional dishes from Burundi, a landlocked country in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Isupu gitoke kibisi is a filling green banana soup and I biraya ninyama is a hearty potato and goat meat main dish that is popular in rural areas throughout Burundi. Our instructor, Fatuma Hussein, is from Burundi and came to Vermont in 2007. Fatuma is an accomplished cook and enjoys sharing her knowledge and love of Burundian food. Fatuma works as a cook at the downtown City Market in Burlington.

Fickle Pickling with Miss Weinerz

Food EducationCome join Miss Weinerz to learn the basics of brines from salted lactos to vinegar boils. We’ll be pickling a variety of vegetables from local farms. Ren Weiner is the owner, baker and chef of Miss Weinerz. Ren is a food processor focused on ecological resiliency in the food system. Her sweet treats fly out of City Market faster than you can say “Lemon Balm & Gooseberry Jam Donut”!

Diggers’ Mirth Collective

Crop MobJoin us for a volunteer work party at Diggers’ Mirth Collective Farm down in Burlington’s Intervale. Diggers’ Mirth is a 16 acre organic farm growing a variety of fruits and vegetables for the greater Burlington community. The Diggers have been growing vegetables for City Market since the farm started 26 years ago!

Come join the Diggers in some fall harvest and cleanup! Light snacks will be provided. Please come prepared with appropriate layers (that you don’t mind getting dirty), sturdy shoes, work gloves, and water. City Market Member Workers can earn hours for their time.
