CURLING CHALLENGE – Howard Center is preparing for its 9th Annual Curling Challenge at Cairns Arena in South Burlington on Friday, March 9th and Saturday, March 10th. On Friday, from 4-6 p.m. they need volunteers to help unload their vans (tables, chairs and supplies), and on Saturday, they need volunteers in shifts from 7-10 a.m., 10 a.m.-1 p.m., 1-4 p.m. and 4-7 p.m. to help with set up, meeting and greeting, refreshments, and more. MARDI GRAS! – It’s time for Magic Hat’s Mardi Gras Parade benefitting the Vermont Foodbank, and they are in need of volunteers to help keep the parade route safe, walk beside floats, sell Mardi Gras swag and more. Volunteers will be rewarded with a Mardi Gras T-shirt, snacks, and a great day. WEBSITE GURU NEEDED – Island Arts in North Hero is in need of a computer savvy volunteer with a love for the arts to manage the functions of their website from May through August. Tasks include linking courses to descriptions, entering registrations and payment, linking concerts to payments and printing receipts, etc. Work can be done in their office or from home. Island Arts is also looking for a volunteer familiar with Word and Excel to help in the office 2-3 days a week. Tasks include copying, scanning and helping with grants. HOMEWORK – Sara Holbrook Community Center invites volunteers to join the Hunt Middle School Homework Help Team to work with students on daily homework and projects. Volunteers can work with students on specific worksheets and projects or help a student master a skill. The program runs Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 3-4:30 p.m. and Wednesday 2:10-3:45/4 p.m. Contact Elizabeth Pelkey at 316-1454 or email epelkey@bsdvt.org.
THE CHILDREN ARE WAITING – You can make a difference in the life of a child by joining the Foster Grandparents Program. Foster Grandparents are volunteers 55 years of age and over who serve at community agencies such as preschools, child cares, Head Starts and elementary schools under teacher and staff supervision. They serve between 15 and 40 hours a week and receive a small, non-taxable stipend. Tasks are related to tutoring, mentoring, and building self-esteem. Volunteers are particularly needed at North Hero Elementary, Richmond Elementary and Edmunds Elementary Schools. Background check required. SCHOOL BUDDIES – RSVP of Northwest Vermont is looking for volunteers, age 55 and over, to serve as RSVP School buddies for elementary school children who have been identified by teachers as not meeting academic standards. Volunteers serve 1-2 hours a day, once or twice a week during the school year at the school site, supervised by a classroom teacher. They help children with reading, math, spelling and/or other academic areas. Volunteers are particularly needed at Grand Isle Elementary, Camels Hump Middle School and Richmond Elementary School.
