SUNY New Paltz to Divest From Fossil Fuel Companies
The SUNY New Paltz Foundation board voted recently to remove endowment funds from direct investment in fossil fuel companies. The initial request to consider divestment came from a group of students who raised the issue with the college president in September 2016. The SUNY New Paltz Foundation endowment currently stands at about $20 million. Data as of June 30, 2017, show that about 4.5 percent, or $920,055, was directly invested in fossil fuel companies.

AASHE invites webinar proposals for 2018. Proposals at any level on topics of interest to AASHE’s diverse membership are welcome. Deadline to submit is Oct. 27.

Campus Sustainability Month Movie Screening Opportunity

Held every October, Campus Sustainability Month is an international celebration of sustainability in higher education. As part of the celebration, AASHE and Bullfrog Films are offering institutions the opportunity to screen one of four movies in October for the discounted rate of $85 (normally $100+) or purchase the DVD with a 15 percent discount.

Sustainability Across the Curriculum Workshop at the University of South Carolina

This workshop will explore how educators can utilize their unique role to inspire, inform and train today’s students to become tomorrow’s sustainability champions. Intended to support faculty of all disciplines and levels of familiarity with sustainability, this workshop will provide hands-on activities, case studies and examples of how developing sustainability curriculum can transform challenges faced by today’s environment, local economies and society. The deadline is Oct. 15. The University of South Carolina is one of 13 regional AASHE Centers for Sustainability Across the Curriculum.

Sponsor-A-Hive Bee Partnership

Open to universities and colleges in the U.S., the Sponsor-A-Hive program, hosted by The Honeybee Conservancy, provides free bees and equipment to help schools safely set up, maintain and observe on-site bee sanctuaries. The deadline to apply to sponsor a hive is Oct. 31.

2017 GameDay Recycling Challenge

Registration is open for the 2017 GameDay Recycling Challenge, a friendly competition for colleges and universities to promote waste reduction at home football games. Open to college football games of all divisions and conferences, the competition aims to increase awareness of sustainability and recycling on campus, create student engagement and draw a connection between athletics and sustainability.

The 2017 Higher Education Sustainability Staffing Survey Report examines the nature of sustainability positions at colleges and universities, providing insights into salaries, funding, supervision, job satisfaction and challenges. Improvements to the report include information from outside of the U.S. and Canada, and graphical data comparisons.
