Fewer Champlain Algae Blooms — So Far
LCC volunteer blue-green algae monitors have contributed nearly 1,000 reports of conditions around the lake so far this summer. Conditions to date have been better than normal with fewer, less intense blooms. The lower level of blooms is likely due to an absence of spring runoff. Read more… |

Giant Sturgeon Washes Ashore
A dead six foot nine inch sturgeon washed ashore in Isle La Motte earlier this month. The fish is one of the largest seen in modern times on the lake according to Chet MacKenzie of Vermont Fish and Wildlife. Officials think this fish died of natural causes. Read more… |

Bacteria Close Beaches Around the Region

Twelve-year-old Catches Record Fish
Twelve-year-old Amelia Whalen of Witherbee has some fish story today. She got the catch of her life on Lake Champlain, June 4 in Essex, NY when she landed a 36.5 inch, 29 pound 14 ounce freshwater drum. The fish was the largest drum ever caught in New York, topping the record set in 2014 by more than three pounds. Read more… |

California Plagued by Algae Blooms
While conditions may be relatively good on Lake Champlain this year, blue-green algae blooms in California made national news earlier this week. National Public Radio reported that California has posted danger signs for at least 30 lakes and reservoirs this summer. Most alarmingly, toxin levels have been high as well, with readings up to 150,000 micrograms of microcystin per liter. Read more… |
