The Burlington Electric Department (BED) is Vermont’s largest municipally owned electric
utility serving more than 19,600 customers. BED is the exclusive provider of electric service to the City of
Burlington, an area of approximately 16 square miles, and the Burlington International Airport in South
Burlington. BED is also the operator and 50 percent owner of the Joseph C McNeil Wood-Powered
Electric Generating Facility located in Burlington’s Intervale. In October 2014, BED became the first
electric utility in the nation to source 100% of its electricity from renewable sources.
Internship Opportunity: Burlington Electric is offering a challenging summer internship for a student in
the information technology, networking and/or security disciplines. The primary focus of this internship
will be designing and implementing a formalized security operations program for BED’s business
information systems. College-level students in any Network, Digital Forensics or Security Major are
encouraged to apply. The selected candidate will work with BED’s IT team and report directly to Sue
Fritz, Director of Information Technology.
This internship will entail:
Becoming familiar with relevant industry regulatory requirements.
Performing routine audits to help identify gaps in current security.
Ensuring existing security technology is optimally configured.
Developing operational processes related to systems and network monitoring and incident
Assisting with the update of existing security policies.
Qualifications: Experience in Network, Digital Forensics or Security is a fundamental requirement. The
selected candidate must also be able to work independently with minimum supervision, be comfortable
in an office environment, an enthusiastic learner, and able to follow instructions and produce results in a

Timing and Compensation: This internship will run over the summer months (May-August) and
involve between 8-12 hours per week. The selected candidate is expected to arrange school or class
credit in compensation for this internship opportunity.
