Summary

Bright Blue EcoMedia and Bear Roots Farm are collaborating to develop a Permaculture Education / Demonstration Center. We are building a skilled team to implement on-the-ground systems, educational programming and media strategies to broaden the message. We are seeking up to four interns for the summer of 2015. This opportunity is in the Barre/Montpelier area. Interns will get exposure to small-scale organic vegetable production, CSA & farmers markets, permaculture, ecological design, ecological economics, ecomedia and many more innovative design strategies.

Project Description

Bear Roots Farm is a small-scale diversified organic vegetable farm with plans to diversify and create educational opportunities. Bright Blue EcoMedia is an Emmy-award winning media company that tells stories of ecological design and communities in transition.  We are hosting a Permaculture Design Course (PDC) this summer and will need help with:

– Existing organic vegetable production, CSA management and Farmers Markets

– Identification of additional business opportunities on the farm and throughout the Barre/Montpelier Food shed

– Development of viable business plans

– PDC promotion and general support for Aug. 9-21 course

– Media Production: Photography, video & social media for PDC promotion and creation of educational material.

 

Specifics

Schedule will vary based on interest and specific work focus. There may be on-site housing for individuals seeking a more integrated experience. Internships will include the 72-hour Permaculture Design Course and certificate. These are unpaid internships.

Internship Descriptions

 

Permaculture Apprentice (2):

We are seeking 2 interns to investigate viable options for the evolution of Bear Roots Farm, a small-scale diversified organic vegetable farm in Barre, Vermont; Interns should be self-motivated and excited about hard work. You will have the direct experience of a small-scale organic vegetable farm including fieldwork, greenhouse, Farmers Market, and CSA organization. You will have an opportunity to assist with various market research and feasibility studies for creating a Regional Food Hub, assessing aggregation and transportation options; determining viability of a regional compost facility, etc. Participation in PDC course is free. Intern will work directly with Jon Wagner and Karin Bellemare, and the Permaculture faculty to design and implement various aspects of this system.

 

Assistant Producer, EcoMedia (1):

We are seeking an individual interested in learning or expanding their filmmaking, photography and writing skills. The ideal candidate will have some photography/video experience and social media savvy. as well as an interest in ecological design / regenerative agriculture. This Intern will work directly with Vic Guadagno of Bright Blue Media on a media strategy, content production, and social media updates. Time will be approximately 50/50 – onsite capturing media; and studio work, editing, writing and posting. Student can participate in PDC course for free.

 

GIS / Graphic Designer (1):

We are seeking a graphic designer and GIS specialist to help show the connection between the various scales of design. Our starting point will be the Bear Roots Farm, elevation and contours and the ecological design components. We will then expand our scale to include the Barre/Montpelier region and include the major components of this food shed. These will include farms, production centers, transport, distribution, retail, etc. This opportunity will include fieldwork & mapping as well as computer work either in our Montpelier home-office or in your own work environment. This Intern will work directly with Vic Guadagno of Bright Blue Media.
