call to action for safe biking for everyone in Burlington

Last fall, many worked tirelessly to take the idea of a “bikeable Burlington” closer to reality in Burlington’s New North End. Currently, Local Motion is working to take the “bikeable Burlington” idea city-wide — and to share with you two things that you can make a difference for safe biking over the next week.
First some good news:  this spring, Burlington will launch the development of its first-ever “Bike-Walk Master Plan.”  Even better, Local Motion has been invited by the City to serve on the core technical committee for the project, which means we will be on the inside as the plan comes together.
Here are two easy actions you can take **next week** to strengthen the City’s commitment to making Burlington truly bikeable:
  1. Come to the City Council meeting next Monday to voice your support for a walkable, bikeable city!  Councilors will be voting at that meeting on a resolution to authorize the walk-bike master plan process, and they need to hear from you that this is a priority.  The meeting starts at 7 PM on February 9 in City Hall.  Check this link for an agenda (should be posted Friday) so you know what time to arrive.
  2. Attend AARP’s “Mayoral Candidate Forum” next Tuesday and make sure improvements for biking are a major campaign issue!  In particular, ask all the candidates what they will commit to doing on the ground in the next three years to make our streets safer for biking.  The forum is from 6:30 to 8:00 PM on February 10 at the Unitarian Church at the top of Church Street.  If you can’t make it, you can email questions for the candidates to Kelly Stoddard Poor at <kstoddardpoor@aarp.org>.

Thanks again for your commitment to making Burlington the kind of city where everyone feels comfortable biking anywhere.  Together, we will make it happen.
