Abenaki Heritage Garden Intern:

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

The internship position at the Abenaki Heritage Garden would assist the Intervale Center’s Land Manager in all aspects of the garden’s stewardship.   Tasks would include garden maintenance, developing outreach strategies and materials, research, and event planning/coordinating.  The primary task would be helping to keep the garden beautiful and vigorous.  The secondary and tertiary tasks will be divided among projects that the garden manager has not had time to accomplish in previous years- outreach materials and/or strategies and event planning/coordinating.  The intern is also responsible for representing the Abenaki Heritage Garden, the Intervale Center and UVM in a professional and courteous manner.

DESCRIPTION OF TRAINING AND SUPERVISION:

Initial garden orientation and training will be accomplished through hands-on gardening (planting, weeding, mulching, harvesting, etc.) alongside the garden’s manager.  This will create a relaxed, “non-lecture” atmosphere which will be setting for questions to be asked.  There are also reading materials readily available to get into greater detail.  Work will be supervised by the Land Manager, but there may be occasions when the intern will need to work unsupervised, after sufficient instruction.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

Interns must be able to work outdoors, have a good work ethic, be punctual, and thorough.  Gardening experience, knowledge of plants and Native American culture are beneficial but not mandatory.  Internship would be part time and unpaid but the supervisor is happy to work with the intern to earn academic credit
