Washington Monthly Releases ‘Best Colleges for Student Voting’ List
The Washington Monthly ranking represents their second year for measuring how well colleges encourage their students to vote, boosting democratic participation and civic engagement. The ranking is based on data from the National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE).

U Maryland Signs ‘Cool Food Pledge’
The pledge commits the university to reducing food-related greenhouse gas emissions 25 percent by 2030. It is an initiative from the World Resources Institute to fight climate change and bring more sustainable food to dining halls, campus cafes and event catering.

AASHE 2019 Workshop: Leading with Circular Economy Concepts, Business Cases and Tools

This pre-conference, half-day workshop will focus on the key leadership skills for sustainability administrators and directors who need to make effective cases for circular economy programs (like zero waste), deliver successful metrics, and have a thriving campus program on sustainability that is deemed essential and value added by all. Some topics covered will be the process mapping for circular economy concepts and triple bottom line; business case development; metrics development for useful KPIs; project and program management tools; and how to connect to AASHE STARS.

AASHE Member Discount: Free Subscription to Green Building & Design Bimonthly Magazine

AASHE members are eligible to receive a free subscription ($60 value) to gb&d’s bimonthly magazine. Green Building & Design is a trade magazine that connects and inspires green building professionals by partnering with those at the forefront of sustainable design, development, planning and policy.

Washington Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference (WOHESC) Call for Proposals

Higher education sustainability stakeholders in Washington State and Oregon are encouraged to submit proposals to the Washington Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference (WOHESC), happening March 2-3, 2020, at the University of Oregon. The conference theme is Root Causes and Positive Actions, focusing on root causes to sustainability challenges and positive actions to address them while simultaneously intersecting with diversity, equity and inclusion. The deadline to submit a proposal is Oct. 11.

ACE Leadership Awards

The American Council on Education is accepting nominations for three ACE awards honoring individuals or programs that work to diversify the ranks of higher education leadership. Nominations will be accepted until Oct. 18.

APPA Sustainability Innovation Award

APPA’s Sustainability Innovation Award in Facilities Management is designed to recognize and promote unique and innovative sustainable practices in the educational facilities and campus environments. It is awarded to educational institutions that have implemented a significant or transformative program and/or processes that enhance service delivery, lower costs, create a green and/or sustainable environment, or otherwise benefit the educational institution supporting student success and environmental stewardship. Applications are due Nov. 30.

SDGs Design International Awards 2019

These awards invite students from all over the world to use their design skills to create new, bold and innovative solutions. Designs can be submitted for SDG 13 (designs to counter damage caused by natural disasters), SDG 14 (designs to protect the ocean’s abundance and beauty), or SDG 10 (designs for human coexistence beyond nationality, ethnicity, or age). Any genre of design is accepted, with students from any university, vocational school or graduate school eligible to apply. The grand prize to be awarded is $2,800 (300,000 Japanese yen). The initial review period closes on Oct. 31.

The People’s Ecochallenge

The People’s Ecochallenge is a 21-day environmental and social engagement program presented by Northwest Earth Institute that challenges participants to connect the dots between their values and actions. From Oct. 2 – 23, individuals make a 21-day commitment to complete specified actions. For every completed action, participants earn points, which will, if they are part of a team, contribute to the team’s total points. The challenge is free to join and everyone is welcome.

Green Launchpad Educators Workshop

This interactive workshop presented by VentureWell is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to integrate sustainable invention and innovation curriculum and practices into courses, whether they are existing core courses or sustainability-specific ones. Early bird registration ends Oct. 1.

Strengthening American Democracy: A Guide for Developing an Action Plan to Increase Civic Learning, Political Engagement, and Voter Participation Among College Students, published by Students Learn Students Vote Coalition, is an improved and expanded guide designed to help faculty, staff and students write strong campus action plans to increase nonpartisan civic learning, political engagement, and voter participation among college students. It provides a framework for developing and documenting institutional goals and strategies. It is not meant to be prescriptive but adapted to institutional context.
