U San Diego Introduces PhD in Education for Social Justice
The School of Leadership and Education Sciences at the University of San Diego will welcome its first cohort of students in fall 2019 for the Education for Social Justice Ph.D. and Ed.S. programs. The online program offers a course of study that allows students to develop research, teaching and advocacy skills by using local, national and international contexts to construct more equitable, tolerant and socially just societies and institutions.

Methodist Theological School Ohio Announces Masters in Social Justice
The new professional master’s degree provides a core curriculum drawing from ethics, religion and public leadership. Students engage in a cross-cultural immersion experience and a customizable 280-hour internship. The program aims to help students develop skills and strategies for leading, organizing, educating and collaborating in diverse social, political, religious and educational contexts.

SUNY Fredonia Creates Endowment to Promote Diversity Ed
The Collingwood Distinguished Lecture for Diversity was recently established with a $250,000 gift from an anonymous Fredonia graduate. The donation will provide annual support for an honorarium to bring a nationally recognized speaker of diversity to the Fredonia campus each year. The lecture is an effort to promote leadership, education, advocacy and outreach for underrepresented groups or issues in society, and support the integration of diversity, as a whole, into the academic community.

AASHE Sustainability Awards: Call for Submissions

The annual AASHE Sustainability Awards provide global recognition to the individuals and organizations leading the higher education sustainability movement. By raising the visibility of high-impact sustainability projects, pioneering research and outstanding leadership, the awards help to disseminate innovations and inspire progress toward environmental, social and economic health. Submissions and nominations are due by May 10.

AASHE Member Discount: 20% Off NESI Global Forum

The New Economy and Social Innovation (NESI) Global Forum, taking place April 24-26, 2019, in Málaga, Spain, is a global gathering of people and organizations involved in the development of the new economy that focuses on people and planet. This year’s NESI gathering will explore how to achieve the U.N. SDGs through local action and social innovation. AASHE members can receive 20 percent off tickets by using the code C00-AASHE.

CoFED Summer Co-Op Academy

CoFED’s Summer Co-op Academy is a week-long education intensive designed for Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian and Pacific Islander youth who are working in food cooperatives and collectives to grow community health and wealth through food and land. The next academy is June 17-23, location to be announced. Applications will be accepted through March 15.

U.N. Global Climate Action Awards

Spearheaded by U.N. Climate Change’s Momentum for Change initiative, the U.N. Global Climate Action Award recognizes innovative, scalable and replicable examples of projects and initiatives that tackle climate change. There are four areas of focus: Women for Results; Financing for Climate Friendly Investment; Planetary Health; and Climate Neutral Now. The deadline to apply is April 30.

New Campus Sustainability Hub Resources: Green Fund Database

The Green Fund Database is a new content type in the Campus Sustainability Hub. The database aspires to be a comprehensive listing of green and revolving funds at higher education institutions. There are currently 265 resources and 215 institutions featured. New green funds can be added at any time.

Metropolitan Universities Journal: Urban and Metropolitan Universities: The Transformative Power of Anchor Institutions

The new issue of Metropolitan Universities Journal focuses on the role of urban and metropolitan universities as anchor institutions in their community to address long standing inequities. Anchor institutions are nonprofit or public institutions that are rooted in place. These institutions have a mission to serve and are the largest employers and purchaser of goods and services in many communities. Also, they have other assets and capacities that can be leveraged to support reciprocal community development, including local hiring, procurement, and investment practices.

International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education: New Issue

The latest issue includes articles on sustainability in chemistry curriculum and textile and apparel education, the impacts of higher education institutions on sustainable development, and teaching the health impacts of climate change.

New Issue: Sustainability: Journal of Record

The latest issue includes an article about making the connection between environmental justice and sustainable development, and a review of books, reports, films, websites and applications.
