Description

Community composting presents a scalable food diversion option that is applicable in urban, suburban, or rural communities. Compost programs can be established at community gardens (e.g. neighborhood, urban, tribal, etc.), farms, schools, or other locations, such as hospitals and businesses.  Community composting provides an essential role in the evolution of food scrap diversion. Through outreach and participation residents learn about food scrap diversion, the benefits of composting, and how using compost products can benefit their community.

This training is designed to help community composters fully implement the collection and composting of food scraps. Participants will gain the knowledge to: safely collect and manage food scraps; accumulate and store carbon sources for the compost system; composting basics & beyond, site management, volunteer recruitment and training, troubleshooting, and more.

Training synopsis:

  • Support & volunteer assessment, recruitment, training
  • Compost site management—gaining community support, tasks
  • Feedstock collection—what’s acceptable, tips on collection
  • Compost system options, siting, set up, winter preparation
  • Managing the compost system—elements of composting, recipe, hot compost
  • Troubleshooting & Tips

  • Discussion and Q&A
  • Hands-on exercises and role playing
  • Community compost site tour
