As part of its Defeat the Peak program, Burlington Electric has issued a peak day alert, encouraging members of the Burlington community to reduce their energy usage on Tuesday from 6:00-8:00pm. If together we hit our targeted amount of load reduction, community nonprofit Steps to End Domestic Violence will be awarded $1,000.
Burlingtonians can lend a hand by taking the following steps on what is projected to be an unusually hot fall day:
• Raise thermostat temperatures or turn off air conditioners after returning home from work and wait until after 8:00pm to return air conditioners to previous settings;
• Wait until after 8:00pm or later to use washing machines, clothing dryers, dishwashers, and other appliances;
• Turn off non-essential lights until 8:00pm and later; and
• Delay other discretionary electric consumption until after 8:00pm.
“We’re excited about our ‘Triple Bottom Line’ approach to defeating the peak here in Burlington,” stated Neale Lunderville, Burlington Electric Department General Manger. “What a terrific win-win-win when our community comes together to keep costs low, protect the environment, and provide immediate support to impactful community nonprofits. Defeat the Peak serves as another part our plan to make Burlington a net zero energy city.”
Two more traditional incentives for Burlingtonians who take peak day actions include: potential reductions in utility costs that help keep electric rates low and stable; and environmental benefits that come with reduced energy demand on the regional electric grid, which decreases the need for use of polluting oil and natural gas generators around New England. A more unique and innovative incentive recently introduced by Burlington Electric based on customer input is a community reward opportunity through which a local nonprofit – in this case Steps to End Domestic Violence – will benefit from a $1,000 contribution from Burlington Electric if our customers hit the targeted amount of load reduction on a peak day.
Kelly Dougherty, Executive Director of Steps to End Domestic Violence, said: “Our team at Steps to End Domestic Violence will be cheering on the Burlington community to defeat the peak tomorrow. Achieving this goal would provide important support for our work to assist in the transition to a safe, independent life for individuals who have been affected by domestic abuse and to promote a culture that fosters justice, equity and safety.”

In an effort to reduce the amount of energy consumed here at Champlain College, the following are a few suggestions on how you can help us conserve. Please consider these suggestions — over the next few, very warm days. These energy tips are as follows:
- Turn off all Champlain office or residence hall lights, computers and other miscellaneous office — or electronic equipment (including PC monitors, laser printers and copy machines) when not needed. Also, please “unplug” those electrical devices that are typically not being used for an extended period of time.
- Switch or enable the “energy-saving” feature on your desktop or laptop computer. This will turn off your monitor, but leave your PC in a standby mode.
- Make sure that all office windows and exterior doors are securely closed, at all times, including the exterior storm windows and doors – only if your campus building or office is air conditioned.
- Pull the window shades or blinds closed, during the day, in order to lessen the heat gain during the warm, summer months.
- Raise the temperature setting of your air conditioner’s thermostat to 78 degrees — and please turn off before leaving your office for the evening. Do not leave A/C on overnight.
Please submit a SchoolDude Work Order for issues (malfunction windows, lights, etc.)
